Nicole Jackson MN553 Journal One August 29, 2023 Journal One How do I envision this advanced pharmacology course adding to my knowledge of pharmacology? Advanced pharmacology will allow me to gain a working knowledge of drug actions, correct dosing, and drug absorption and removal from the body that will aid me in the medical management of my specific and vulnerable population of patients as a future psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP). The academic curriculum and the hard work that I will put in to strengthen my knowledge base prepares me for a safe and effective advanced nursing practice in my future professional role. I feel that this course will also lay the foundation to understand the information regarding psychotropic medications and treatment regimen. How do I think I will use knowledge of pharmacology differently as an advanced practice nurse than you do as an RN? The knowledge gained from this advanced pharmacology course will differ from my current knowledge base as a bedside Registered Nurse (RN). As an RN, medication education is focused on the safe administration of medication after ordered by a provider. It also involves me being aware of nursing interventions patients on specific drug regimens. As a future PMHNP, I will not only use this information for the reasons mentioned above, but I will also be responsible for the initiation and therapeutic management of my specific patient population. I will be responsible for the correct

dosing and supervision of any interventions related to the safe care of my future patients. What are my expectations of my advanced practice role, specifically as a prescriber? As a provider, I expect to be able to prescribe and manage drug regimens for my future vulnerable patient population safely and confidently. I also want to understand special indications and/or contraindications for certain drugs like those with kidney or liver disorders and/orthose immunosuppressed. I would also like to be able to distinguish some implicit biases that are associated with specific drugs and/or treatment regimens. I believe that being aware of the unspoken prejudices attributed to certain drugs or groups will allow me to be a fair prescriber and a more culturally competent PMHNP. What do I think the role of standards of care are in the prescribing process? I feel that the standards of care and its associated roles and responsibilities in the prescribing process are the exact same as in the RN process just at an elevated level. In the prescribing process, there will be the requirement to assess, diagnose, plan, implement, and evaluate in the medical management of patients. Through the obtaining of both objective and subjective data as well as with proper diagnostic evaluation, I will be able to identify a diagnosis and with my knowledge of pharmacology initiate an appropriate drug regimen of choice. My knowledge base will allow for the careful planning and implementation of the course of therapy that best fits the patient from a holistic perspective.
