Our goal is to serve all people and places within our authority with high-quality, easily accessible healthcare services. We work to keep our people healthy, encourage healthy lives, and efficiently address their medical needs and emergencies (Fairfield County Department of Health (FDH), n.d.-a). The Fairfield County Health Department has a colorful history. When it was first established in 1893, it was a little clinic serving the neighborhood's medical needs. It has developed into a comprehensive health department offering a variety of services throughout time (FDH,2023a) Name and credentials of the health commissioner: Joe Ebel, MS, MBA, REHS. The health department's first priorities were obesity, mental health, focusing on depression, and substance use and addiction. The health department broadened its purview and started providing a wider array of services, such as family planning, nutrition counseling, and maternity care.
The Fairfield County Health Unit is now an essential part of the city's medical infrastructure. To meet the changing health requirements of the populace, it works closely with a range of governmental departments, non-governmental organizations, and community groups. Doctors, nurses, midwives, and public health workers are among the committed healthcare professionals that work diligently in the department to provide the citizens of Fairfield County with basic healthcare services (FDH, 2023a). What services does the health department offer? Many services are provided by the Fairfield County Health Department to enhance community health and well-being. Among the essential services the department offers are the following: General medical consultations, screenings for preventative diseases, and treatment of common ailments are among the basic healthcare services offered by the health department. These services guarantee that people receive adequate and timely medical treatment. The department offers family planning services, vaccinations, prenatal and postnatal care, and other services with an emphasis on the well-being of mothers and their offspring. They also offer help for Mental Health, focusing on Depression; and Substance Use and Addiction. To support healthy pregnancies and the development of young children, they also provide health education initiatives. To stop the spread of infectious illnesses, the health department is essential. They carry out disease surveillance, immunization efforts, and outbreak investigations. Additionally, they provide the community tools and information on good hygiene and illness prevention. The
department plans workshops, seminars, and community outreach activities as part of its active involvement in these areas. These initiatives seek to encourage healthy lifestyles, increase public knowledge of various health challenges, and provide people the power to make decisions about their own health (FDH, 2023a). Environmental health: The community's environmental health standards are monitored and promoted by the health department. They carry out inspections, uphold sanitary laws, and offer advice on safe food handling, water quality, and waste management. Emergency response and readiness: In terms of readiness and responsiveness to emergencies, the department is essential. Together with other agencies, they create emergency plans, practice drills, and offer medical support in times of catastrophe or public health emergency. Description of the role of the public health nurse in community health: Due to their emphasis on preventative treatment and promotion of general wellbeing, public health nurses are vital to community health. Among their duties are: Health monitoring and assessment: Public health nurses evaluate people's individual, family, and community health requirements.
