Unit 1 Discussion 1
For my course project, I will develop a syllabus related to a scientific course. As a
community college professor, the learning and teaching environment I am
currently in is at the higher educational level. For this assignment, I'd like to focus
on developing a syllabus related to one of the courses I teach, whether it be
biology, anatomy, or psychology. This project aligns with my current career, but
will also help me improve my overall skill set. Most of the syllabuses I have were
designed by prior professors before me for a class that I took over for them as an
adjunct. Now, as a full time professor, I'd like to have practice designing my own
and challenge myself to start from scratch.

Unit 1 Discussion 2
The learning theory I chose was Connectivism. Students have to learn and obtain
new knowledge by utilizing various methods, learning techniques, and skills in
the classroom setting (Siemens, 2005). The experience a student has in the
classroom may also impact how the individual learns and uses the newly
acquired information. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it has been vitally
important for instructors to think of new ways to teach students with the
online learning environment. Therefore, instructors may use the theory of
connectivism to integrate new learning opportunities for the students both online
and with an in-person setting for classes (Siemens, 2005).
Connectivism is just as critical for instructors as it is students. In order to be an
effective faculty member, the teacher needs to have effective methods for
instruction whether the setting is online or in-person (Siemens, 2005). Before the
pandemic started, students had interaction with peers, the professor, and staff
members to aid in finding resources on campus. Now, with the pandemic still
present, there are limited opportunities for some individuals to be in the in-person
classes. Thus, with the online learning platform, it is crucial for interaction to be
present in the form of virtual meetings, discussion boards, or group projects as
well as professors being readily available to contact for help or information. With
resources available online as well as in-person, the students may continue to
develop new learning methods and pursue an education.
