Discussion Board Module 3
Reflecting upon the documentary Crip Camp I have strong feelings. This documentary
is empowering, and raw. Throughout viewing Crip Camp, I did feel a sense of anger and
sadness at the injustice that those who are disabled have faced. Crip Camp shared an insight
and experiences from the disabled young people and their journey. Crip Camp truly expressed
how important that it is to advocate for one another. I resonated with this aspect of the
documentary because in nursing we are our patient’s advocate. “As one considers the health
care environment today, we have learned that the values, collaborative efforts, and practices of
other health professionals are integral to achieving the outcomes of holistic nursing care.”
(Frisch &
Rabinowitsch
, 2019). Many times, our patients cannot communicate their wants and
needs so as the nurse or healthcare provider it is our duty to ensure that our patient’s needs are
met emotionally, physically, and spiritually.
To define what a grassroots effort is it is when the people of a certain region come
together to make a change for an issue. Some of the grassroot efforts that have been taken in
my issue and policy include the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) organization. This
organization comes together to empower and assist veterans in navigating through the services
and benefits that the veteran’s affairs offer. (DAV, 2023). The DAV also provides support
groups to aid in the transition back to civilian life. Veterans receive care from the community
and within the department of veteran’s affairs. It is imperative as healthcare providers that we
are aware of the available resources within our facility and community to assist our patients in
receiving the best care possible.
