NEW LITERACIES IN CURRICULUM INTEGRATION I created this thematic unit with my first graders in mind. I chose working together as my theme as it is often an area of difficulty with students of that age. This theme is easily incorporated into all subjects and most standards. Not only does it assist students in learning standards, but it is also a valuable and needed skill that students need to have for the duration of their academic careers. Students are first introduced to teamwork through digital and visual literacy by using a read aloud, turn and talks, and a KWL chart. Scientific and health literacy are incorporated using a five senses sorting activity that students will do in small groups. Economic and financial literacy are taught by having students work together to buy items from a classroom store using manipulative money. My goal with this unit is that students will learn to effectively work together in all subjects and that learning from each other will become second nature. MODULE 2 Integrated Lesson Plan Template Integrated Thematic Unit Theme: Working Together Lesson Title: Summary of key learning interactions and instruction: Students will be introduced to teamwork by first filling out a KWL chart. Students will fill out the chart with a small group and will continue to add to it as time goes on. Students will hear a read aloud with many opportunities for turn and talks. Students will also complete a sticky note storm in their small groups, noting different ways to be a great group member. NEW LITERACIES IN CURRICULUM INTEGRATION Integrated Thematic Unit Theme: Working Together Lesson Title: - Discuss ways to be a great team member. - Write or draw a few different ideas on how to contribute to the group in a positive way. - Determine what to place on the KWL chart. - List things students want to know about teamwork. - Predict how the characters in the book can work together. Evidence Evaluative Criteria (List 2-3) -Write or draw at least two different ways to work together -Complete a KWL chart, naming a few things learned -Turn and talk about teamwork from the book Assessment Evidence: -Sticky notes with teamwork ideas -Observations of turn and talks -KWL Chart Other Evidence: Activities & Strategies Activity #1 New Literacies Utilized Materials/Resources (for each interaction/activity) Description: Students will be introduced to the theme of teamwork by using the read aloud “Stone Soup” by Marcia Brown. Steps: 1. Introduce the topic of teamwork. 2. Begin a KWL Chart in small groups. 3. Have students discuss what they already know about teamwork. 4. Have students make a list of what they want to know about teamwork. 5. Begin to read the book aloud. Visual Literacy Critical Literacy -KWL Charts for each group -Pencils -Book: “Stone Soup” by Marcia Brown. NEW LITERACIES IN CURRICULUM INTEGRATION Integrated Thematic Unit Theme: Working Together Lesson Title: (for each interaction/activity) Description: Students will be engaged in many turn and talks during the read aloud. These turn and talks will focus on teamwork in the book and will also give students the opportunity to use teamwork by following turn and talk guidelines. Steps: 1. Read the book aloud to the class. 2. Stop along the way, prompting discussions. 3. Questions to ask: Were the townspeople working together? Could the townspeople have helped? Why do you think they did not want to work together? What would you have said if asked to work together? What do you think will happen next? Do you think next time they will work with one another? Visual Literacy Critical Literacy Book: “Stone Soup” my Marcia Brown. Activity #3 New Literacies Utilized Materials/Resources (for each interaction/activity) Description: Students will work together in their groups to create a sticky note storm by writing down ways to work together on sticky notes and filling up their group with ideas. Students will then take a few notes per group and will add them to a class page on the smart board. Steps: 1. Have students go back to their group to brainstorm ways to work together. 2. Have students write or draw a few ways on sticky notes. 3. Have students place those sticky notes on the group table to try and cover the surface. 4. When finished, have each student bring up one note from their group to copy onto the smart board. NEW LITERACIES IN CURRICULUM INTEGRATION Integrated Thematic Unit Theme: Working Together Lesson Title: 5. As a class, we will create a digital representation of ideas. Differentiation Strategies New Literacies Utilized Materials/Resources (for each interaction/activity) Description: Each activity can be differentiated. Rather than writing, drawings can be used for the KWL chart as well as the sticky note storm. For the turn and talks, extra prompting can be given as needed and translators will be matched up with ESOL students. MODULE 3 Integrated Lesson Plan Template Integrated Thematic Unit Theme: Working Together Lesson Title: Five Senses Sort Summary of key learning interactions and instruction: Students will use their five senses to make observations about items given to them. They will then sort those items, asking questions as they go, then will record their results as a group. Desired Results © 2020 AMERICAN COLLEGE OF EDUCATION 4
