Information technology can be used to within a cardiology department to
improve efficiency, quality of care, and patient outcomes by addressing
activities within the value chain.
Efficiency – Information technology can improve the efficiency of a cardiology
department through the management of medical supplies and equipment.
Ensuring that the department has the necessary resources to operate
efficiently can be achieved through the implementation of inventory
management systems. These systems can track medical supplies, automate
reordering, and reduce shortages. These supplies are necessary to
create
a
high functioning cardiology department.
Quality of Care – Information technology can streamline the process of
patient diagnosis and treatment to improve quality of care. For example,
electronic health records can allow cardiologists to better access patient
history, test results, and treatment guidelines. This provides a more robust
support system for decision making amongst team members and allows the
department to
deliver
healthcare efficiently.
Patient Outcomes– Information technology may improve patient outcomes by
enhancing the coordination of patient referrals, consultations, and transfers.
Patients may also have the ability to receive care from home, such as
through telehealth platforms. Since the pandemic, telehealth services have
increased 15x to 32.5M (GAO, 2023). This not only improves patient
experience but also extends the cardiology department’s
support
to the
patient’s home.
The Value Chain model addresses the above activities, and how each
creates, delivers, and supports the department.

Hi James,
You’ve listed human resources such as support staff under support activities. I agree support staff
are essential to quality of care for patients. If you can’t get ahold of the department to schedule
an appointment, pay a bill, or run labs in a timely fashion, then the quality of patient care
diminishes. Additionally, service staff know more about the healthcare system than patients and
serve as an important source of information to the patient (Wagner, 2023). Information systems
can help find qualified candidates through social media platforms such as LinkedIn, or through
job finders such as Indeed. This information technology addresses activities within the value
chain that both create the staff needed to run a cardiology department.
Thanks,
Molly
