1) State whether the characteristics of a quality lesson were present for all students in your elementary physical education classes as a child. I believe that all characteristics of a quality lesson were present in my elementary physical education classes as a child. My teacher was from Argentina and had so many great experiences and games to share with us, along with making sure we all had the proper understanding of the activities and skills we were supposed to be developing in. She was my physical education teacher from 5 th -12 th grade and is still one of my favorite teachers to this day. 2) What class management skills are necessary to be an effective teacher? What are your strategies to manage the appropriate behaviors of students? How to increase students' positive behaviors during your class time? One of the best classroom management skills that I have learned throughout my experience in the classroom as well is going through the education program here at UWS is to be proactive rather than reactive (when applicable). Having students know routines and both positive and negative consequences if expectations are not met helps a great deal in classroom management. Rather than always getting on a student who is not choosing to have appropriate behaviors in class, compliment the students that are behaving well- this will make students want to be acknowledged and complimented and try to mock the same behavior. Modeling expected behavior and excitement for activities and your class is also a good way to show expected behavior. 3) What is the difference between punishment and reinforcement? Reinforcement can be both positive and negative and is used more often than punishment. Reinforcement is giving specific feedback for a student’s behavior while explaining aloud why it is reaching expected behavior or unexpected behavior. Punishment is used as a last resort and is frowned upon in a school setting. Reinforcement increases expected behavior while punishment decreases unwanted behavior. 4) What are your classroom management strategies for your daily class? I don’t currently have my own classroom, but when I did, students helped make the classroom rules for the school year the first day of school. We also decided on consequences together if the expectations were not met. Being consistent with repercussions of not meeting expectations is important and makes students feel as if there is no favoritism. I also model excitement and the expected behavior from students. 5) What are the purposes of assessment?
Assessments are used to gather information and data that shows the effectiveness of teaching and progress of learning. This can assist with making instructional decisions for the class/program. Feedback, diagnosis, curricular change, and motivation are also used through assessments. 6) Advantages and disadvantages of standardized testing Advantages of standardized testing are to see where your school lies for test scores compared to other schools. Standardized testing gives schools an idea of how their programs are doing and what subjects the school may needs to improve on. Disadvantages of standardized testing is how some teachers being to teach to the test in order to score well without making concrete experiences for their students. Standardized testing also is not a fair representation of a students growth and knowledge, and the test does not define them as students and people. 7) What are the best (practical) assessment tools for PE classes? how can you measure/assess your students? The best physical education assessment tools are progress reports, student logs, and self/peer assessments. You can assess students by having a checklist of psychomotor, cognitive, and affective domains in your activity and ensuring that your students are meeting these domains/objectives.
