IEP Meeting: Observation Summary
I have not had the chance to sit in on an IEP meeting with my internship teacher as we are
planning for that to happen on December 5, 2023. I have however been able to attend two
meetings in the high school I work in, and I also watched the YouTube video “The IEP Team
Process: Chapter 5 - The IEP Meeting” that was provided.
In the YouTube video there were multiple people involved and present at the IEP meeting. Those
attending were the special education teacher, general education teacher, school psychologist, the
mother and father of the student, the student, a notetaker, a representative from the middle school
and the assistant principal who was representing the local school district. As I learned that the
student was still in elementary school and would be attending middle school the following year, I
thought that it was a great idea that they included the middle school teacher. I have seen a few
IEPS and been able to attend some in my time working in the district and I have not seen this
happen in my district for students that would be going to our middle school or high school, but I
feel that it would be helpful for them. The only difference in people between the IEP video and
the ones I was able to attend this year at my district is our school counselor and our school nurse
attend ours. I do know that our nurse only attends if there is a reason for her to be involved but
our counselor attends every meeting. Everyone that should have been in attendance for
Dominick’s IEP was there.
As far as the video is concerned, I am not sure if parents were involved in the writing of the IEP
or if they had conversations with the team to give them information beforehand. I do know that
their opinion was taken into consideration during the meeting. They were asked their concerns
and when they discussed the IEP and some changes, they were thinking about they listened to the
parents and decided to change it back and collect more information. They informed the parents

that if it needs to be changed, they can do it later. For the IEPS that I observed I know that
parents were not really involved in writing the IEP but were allowed to voice concerns during the
meeting. I also found it interesting that when I asked if the students’ general education teachers
were involved in the process most of them were not. A few of them attended the IEP meeting but
from what I could tell some of them rely on the special education teacher or the support staff to
implement the IEP. I feel that as a teacher all staff that is involved in teaching the student or
involved need to be involved with the students IEP process.
In all the IEP’s the students were aware that they were on an IEP. They were all included in the
meeting and asked their thoughts and input. For the video they asked him what his favorite
subject was, what he struggled with and about his future plans.
From what I got from the video I
think that the student knows that he is on an IEP and he understands that the people and the IEP
are there to help him in school.
I think overall the meetings went smoothly. Everyone seemed to have the student’s best interest
in mind and all suggestions were accepted openly and discussed. Some things changed and some
did not, but everyone seemed to be on the same page and willing to listen to each other.
I did not really notice anything seeming uncomfortable in the video, the only uneasiness that may
have possibly been there was the parents being a little uneasy asking some questions. It was
mainly when they questioned the team and their suggestions. In the meetings I attended they
went pretty well also but the one thing I noticed with one was that the parents seemed
uncomfortable being there. Overall, I feel that watching and attending these IEP meetings was
beneficial and will help me when it comes to being a part of my own.
