Refer to Chapter 8 of
Groups: Process and Practice
and share how the use of
role-plays among group members could affect the stages of group development.
(Share an example using at least one stage of group development.) What purpose
could role-play serve for individual members and for the group as a whole?
The use of role-plays in group can affect the stages of group development by causing members to get
to a deeper level of exploration into their problems (corey, et al., 2018). A counselor could use roles to
have group members act out what they would say to a family member or friend that they are having
conflict with. Also, the group member could let go of some things they have been holding on to by
telling the person that’s playing the role of a person in their lives how they feel (Corey, et al., 2018).
This may also serve as a starting point for others in the group to begin to talk about relationships in
their lives that have similar dynamics. For example, a man can role-play with another group member as
his brother. He can tell the group member things that he wants to say to his brother but feels he can’t.
He can then get input from the group on whether or not the things he said were appropriate. This can
prompt others in the group to talk about their relationships with their siblings.
