Review the "Stages of Group Counseling" video located in the Topic 4 Resources
and identify potential forms of conflict you can expect at each of the various
stages. What are your own reactions to conflict? How will this influence your
ability to help members recognize and work through conflicts?
Upon watching the video by Dr. Todd Grande, he broke groups into four stages Forming,
Stating, Norming, and performing. Each stage forms its own personal risks of conflict. When
looking at the Forming stage the group members are experiencing high feelings of
defensiveness. This can result in group members engaging in more conflict out of fear of
judgement when engaging in a vulnerable way. This can be addressed by openly discussing
group members' personal goals and having group members talk to each other about their
fears such as judgement in a respectful way. These conflicts can be worked through by having
the group members openly discuss the judgements they fear and who they fear may judge
them. This allows the opportunity for group members to provide feedback (Corey & Corey,
2018).
When transitioning into the Storming stage, conflict is most common but also crucial
for an effective group (Grande, 2015). In the Storming stage there are higher levels of anxiety
and frustration. Group members are also in a stage of seeking control or dominance. The
storming stage commonly reoccurs, and it is extremely important for the group leader to
regulate these conflicts and assist group members in resolving them in an effective way. In
moments of anxiety, individuals are in their fight or flight, as a group leader, I want to
reassure I provide a sense of safety in these moments and reassure every group member
knows they are being heard. When a group enters the Norming stage, there is a sense of
unity and balance in the group. However, there is also a higher risk of subgrouping occurring.
It is important the group leader is aware of any potential risks of subgrouping and
appropriately addresses why these subgroups can be harmful for the group. The last stage is
the Performing stage. This stage can be very productive but depending on how conflicts have
been resolved in previous stages, regression can occur (Grande, 2015). When in conflict I
personally am the type of person who wants to talk about the situation. I find it important to
discuss disagreements but also try to understand all perspectives. Especially in groups.
Everyone has had different experiences, and we want to support all members accordingly.
This video has helped me realize the importance of constant awareness. It is important as a
group leader. I am constantly observing and reassuring the group is going in a productive
direction.
