Question 1
What do you make of the fact that Kitty seems only able to eat when it is mandatory? What
does this tell you about her inner struggle regarding the acceptability of food and eating? Why
do you think Kitty seeks out situations that will force her to eat? Do you believe that forcing
her to eat is an appropriate strategy here? Why or why not?
I think that Kitty likes to seek out situations where she is forced to eat because that is the only
way that she will eat. In these kinds of situations, Kitty might feel like she does not have any
control over how or when she is able to eat, but if someone forces her to eat something, in
whatever way possible, that might, on the inside, make her feel a bit better. She knows that
what she is doing is not good for her. She is not healthy, and deep down, she understands that,
but her brain is telling her otherwise. Her brain is telling her that she can go without eating and
be fine. Many people who have had eating disorders know what that is like; I have been there.
In ninth grade, I had an eating disorder for a few months; it was not anything too major and
nothing that was as dangerous as anorexia. I would just not eat and skip many meals.
Eventually, I understood that what I was doing was not okay and that it was not helping my
body; in fact, it was making me more unhealthy. I, sadly, am not able to eat the same amount of
food that I used to when I was younger because of the effects of my eating disorder, but I was
lucky enough to understand that it was not okay and I needed to stop. More intense eating
disorders, like Kitty's anorexia, really get into their brains and affect them in a way that is

almost irreversible. For Kitty, she needed the option of not eating taken away from her, and she
knows that. She knows that the only way to get her to actually eat something sustainable is for
someone to make that decision for her. It is a good thing that, deep down, she knows that.
