6-1 Healthcare Research Assignment: Diversity of Medical Traditions
In Ethiopia, the quality of life is significantly different from that of the United States. Unlike
the United States, Ethiopia has to deal with many issues, like not having safe drinking water. “In
total, 31.1% rely on unprotected water for their daily needs.”(Kahn, 2022). Poverty in Ethiopia,
however, has seen a decline. When looking at other countries in Africa and Ethiopia, you see a
significant reduction. Between 2010 and 2016, the number of individuals living below the
national poverty line decreased by 21% from 29.6%. This success can be attributed to their
success in agriculture, mainly their coffee plantation. Ethiopia contains two Educational Systems
based on Christianity and Islam. Education is done primarily by clergy within the area. Their
educational system goes from pre-k to 12th grade. Unfortunately, “in the last two years,
Ethiopia's educational system has suffered significant setbacks due to overlapping armed
conflict, drought, and COVID-19. Eight thousand schools have been damaged, looted, and
destroyed since 2021.”(

Development
, n.d.). Ethiopia does have a healthcare system that includes hospitals, health
centers, and health posts. “ The lowest primary care level is health post staffed with two women
each to care for their communities.” (
ETHIOPIA | Summary
, 2023). While Ethiopia does have
healthcare, it is still developing and has limited access to modern healthcare. They have a birth
rate of 30.724 per 1000 people. This was a 1.48% decline from 2021. The lifespan in Ethiopia is
up to 67.81 years. Women tend to live a few more years longer than men. “According to the
latest data published in 2020, life expectancy in Ethiopia shows men live to 66.9 and females live
up to 70.5.”(
Life Expectancy in Ethiopia
, n.d.). In my opinion, Ethiopia is trying its best, given
the recent COVID crisis and arms problem.
However, the Ethiopian government seems to be struggling with maintaining modern health
and mental health, which is limited. A traditional medicine from Ethiopia is an herbal plant
called Jatropha curves L. This medicinal plant treats abdominal pain, rabies tumors, wounds,
bleeding after delivery, and muscle cramps. “Most of the Jatropha currently grown is toxic. This
renders the seed cake unsuitable for use as livestock feed and may present a human safety
hazard”.(Brittaine, 2010). Even though the plant is toxic, it has some advantages: antimicrobial,
anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and contains antioxidant properties. In Ethiopia, abortion is
prohibited by the criminal code unless the pregnancy resulted because of rape, incest,
abnormalities, or if the pregnancy is harming the woman.
Euthanasia is illegal in Ethiopia, like most countries in the world. Euthanasia is controversial
and debated in Africa. Like most African countries, Ethiopia believes that caring for and
preserving life is a duty. There have been talks about stem cell transplant services in Ethiopia. “
Ethiopia has made significant progress in stem cell therapy, and several highly skilled and
experienced therapy doctors are now practicing there.”(n.d.). Ethiopia has “regulations for
procedures for multilateral access to genetic resources and Community knowledge.”(Ababa,
2012). This essentially means the laws were created to protect local communities' customary use
