Connection Building These same directions and questions apply to each of the 9 Connection Building assignments during the semester. The goal of Connection Building activities is to get you thinking about how our course concepts connect to your experiences outside of class. For this assignment, you will share an experience you had over the last week that made you think about or reminded you of something that we discussed in class. Keep the following in mind for this assignment: Although you should first consider the concepts we have learned most recently, you can use any concept that we covered in class previously. Acceptable “experiences” can come from a broad range of sources. Examples of places that you can draw these experiences from include o other courses o a television show or movie (though you should comment on how realistic it is) o a socio-political issue, e.g., politicians discussing whether to fund healthcare for children o a memory of something that happened to you in the past that you were reminded of You are free to share exper iences from observations of others in public spaces. You might, for example, see children playing in a public park and make observations about differences in their physical development or overhear a child and parent talking and notice something about the child’s language development. These observations are fine to include but do not o observe anyone beyond what you would normally do in the absence of this assignment o follow or secretly watch anyone for purposes of this assignment o reveal personal information in your answers about any other person you interact with (you can use pseudonyms or generic labels like “mom” or “boss”) o actively or intentionally set up a situation for the purposes of your observation The questions below ask you to identify a relevant course concept. By ‘concept’, I simply mean an idea, principle, or key term. If I have put the word on a slide and taken the time to define and discuss it in class, then you can know that it would fit the definition of concept. Respond to the questions below 1. Describe the situation or experience you are thinking of. Give enough detail so that the example and connection make sense. I have mentioned it before but I was in a preschool class where I was assigned to a specific preschooler to teach the whole year. While following him for over a year I have been able to witness a huge amount of physical development. One of the biggest quantitative changes I have witnessed was his physical strength and body composition. When I first met him he still had his toddler belly and I was able to watch him grow out of it and grow lean muscle. He is insanely strong and can do over 30 push ups in a row now which he could not do when I first met him. I have also been able to watch the integration of his body parts which was really cool to see first hand. When I first met him he couldn’t jump rope properly because he wasn’t able to make his eyes, body, and mind talk that fast and now he will yell at us to swing the jump rope faster and faster because he is able to do it so much better now.
2. Identify and define one concept that this situation made you think about. Explain the meaning of that concept (i.e., put it in your own words, discuss why it is important). Quantitative changes and Integration are both super important aspects in physical development. Quantitative changes are continuous changes in amount, which is important to pay attention to because it can tell you a lot about the development of a child. Integration is important as well, it is the development of coordination which is absolutely crucial to development. 3. Explain how this concept applied in this situation. Think about points such as a. Was your experience of the concept consistent or inconsistent with how it was described and discussed in class? In what ways? My experience was consistent with the examples in class, because the explanation was very clear and similar to b. In what ways did this situation help you to understand the concept differently or more deeply than before?
