1 CHAPTER 10: Strategies to Promote Generalization and Maintenance of Behavior and to Prevent the Development and Recurrence of Behavior CASE STUDY: Identify Generalization and Maintenance and Prevention Strategies and Identify Additional Strategies to Employ Case Study Provided by Edward Cancio James 1 . Identify the strategies that were employed to promote generalization and maintenance during this intervention .
2 2 . Identify the strategies that were employed to prevent the recurrence of James’s challenging behavior and to support the development of appropriate replacement behavior. 3. What additional strategies might be employed to promote generalization and maintenance ? INTERVENTION PLAN ANALYSIS FOR JAMES : 1. Strategies employed to promote Generalization and Maintenance: a. Differential Reinforcement Schedule: The use of a continuous reinforcement schedule for on-task and appropriate behaviors, transitioning to an intermittent schedule, promotes the generalization and maintenance of positive behaviors by gradually reducing external reinforcement reliance. b. Gradual Increase in Task Difficulty and Breaks: Gradually increasing the complexity of tasks and breaks allows James to gradually acquire tolerance and tolerance for academic activities, which aids with generalization. This method makes it easier to transfer acquired habits to a range of academic situations. c. Decoding Agitation Level : By decoding James's level of agitation and aiding when he becomes frustrated, the staff addresses the underlying causes of challenging behavior. This approach contributes to generalization by preemptively addressing potential triggers.
3 2. Strategies that were employed to prevent the recurrence of James’s challenging behavior and to support the development of appropriate replacement behavior. a. Different Reinforcement of Alternative Behaviors: The use of praise, points, activity reinforcers, and tangible reinforcers under DRA helps in preventing the recurrence of challenging behavior by reinforcing appropriate replacement behaviors. This reinforces the idea that engaging in appropriate actions leads to positive consequences. b. Corrective Teaching Strategy : Corrective Teaching provides a systematic approach to address challenging behavior. By stating something positive, describing the problem behavior, providing a rationale, practicing the desired behavior, and praising cooperation, this strategy not only corrects the immediate behavior but also teaches James more appropriate responses. c. Precision Request Strategy : The Precision Request strategy, involving a stepwise process of making requests and reinforcing compliance, supports the development of appropriate behavior. It provides clear expectations and consequences, aiding in preventing recurrence. d. Pairing with Peers : Pairing James with peers who can help during difficult academic tasks promotes appropriate behavior and prevents noncompliance. This social support encourages positive engagement in academic activities.
