Part 1: Family or Community Assignment
Objective:
Students will interview family and community members to collect “testimonials”
about our small town community for our annual Community Pride event.
Description/Rationale:
After learning about the 5Ws and H questioning strategy, students put
their knowledge to work in the field conducting interviews. Students first observe and then
practice constructing questions using who, what, why, when, where, and how. Using mostly
information texts, students understand how this questioning strategy not only summarizes the
content but also goes beyond it by asking unanswered questions. After practicing questioning
techniques with partners, students are sent into the field to video interview the community and
family about our small rural town. These are short video clips that we piece together to feature
during our Community Pride event. It is a “homecoming” of sorts that includes vendors, food,
school open house, and student showcases for art, music, FBLA, NHS, and SGA.
Part 2: Reflection
My first year at this school I was tasked with having my freshmen create a picture collage
to display during Community Pride Day. We took pictures, had them printed, and began putting
them on a bulletin board. During the second after school creation session one of my lovely
freshmen asked, “Why couldn’t we make this a video?” Another student said, “Yeah, we could
do little videos and edit them together to make a longer video to show.” I said, “We were asked
to construct a collage bulletin board–so we will finish this–AND then we will make a video!”
That was the year before Covid. Our video was a show stopper. People were excited to see what
other people had to say about our little community. Now, when my students approach someone
for an interview, they are excited to be part of this tradition that is displayed during Community
Pride Day.

Community Pride Day in King & Queen County is much like homecoming–everyone
comes together to celebrate the rural community that we all call home. When parents and
community become involved in student learning–everyone wins because learner motivation
increases and that means there are more successful learning experiences (AFT, 2023). Even
though it can be nearly impossible to get students to do homework, this interview assignment
engages learners, family, and community to create a product that is worthy of our Community
Pride event. Students recognize the value of the assignment and understand that they play an
important role in getting this project completed. Because students recognize the purpose and
relevance for this homework, they are engaged and enthusiastic about doing a good job and
getting the interviews we need for the final product (Kang, 2023). Parents are equally engaged
and supportive because I provide them “the information and guidance they need” (Youth.gov,
n.d.). Since this project has now become a freshmen tradition, student and parent engagement is
almost assured to be 100%.
Students use chromebooks and personal devices to collect interviews and we have plenty
of technical support to assist putting the final video together. Often there are a few students who
have the confidence and experience to take the lead on producing the final product. What can be
difficult for some students is transportation to get interviews. One way we work around this issue
is to have the student clearly communicate the interview questions and the interviewee sends a
video of themself answering the questions. I have modified the requirements for this process to
allow for ONE video acquired using this format. The expectation is that students will interview
THREE people, one must be a non-family member. We are fortunate to have such enthusiasm
from the community that people will come to our school to meet students for an interview! We
are just now gearing up for Community Pride Day in mid October and a few of my students are
