UNCLASSIFIED EXECUTIVE SUMMARY 30 June 2022 (U) NCO CORE COMPETENCIES IN ASSESSING THE LIGHT BRIGADE . (U) (MLC 406-22-07) (U) (ARNG-ODO-Y) (U) This Executive Summary provides explanations as to the way that using the Non- commissioned Officer (NCO) core competencies could have assisted in the reduction of lives lost in the Charge of the Light Brigade. The Light Brigade was lacking in leadership qualities, training management, and operations required for being an effective NCO. The Commander of the Light Brigade, James Brudenell, was not a respected leader for his troops. (Charge, 4) The troops would have been more trusting of his leadership if he had provided quality training to his men. (Murray, 2020) Commanders who lead by example and mentor their troops have a well-trained fighting unit. (Murray, 2020) Well-trained Soldiers have a better understanding of missions, operations, ethics and values. If the Light Brigade Commander had more advanced leadership skills, he would have reduced the number of soldiers lost on the battlefield. Communication is also a key NCO Core Competency was not effective in this battle. There were numerous occasions that had effective communication been used, there would have been a significant reduction for lives lost. The Command was unsure of where to begin the charge, and though the direction was unclear, no further communication was attempted. (Charge, 4) The Light Brigade and the Heavy Brigade would have increased the odds of victory had communication been a top priority over disdain. (Brain, 1) Communication is essential to lead, coach, and mentor troops. (NCO C3, 11) Casualty numbers were exceedingly high because communication between the British Commander-in-Chief, The unit commanders, and the troops was not a top priority. The charge of the Light Brigade could have had a far different outcome had the NCO Core Competencies been used before and during battle.
