CULTURAL SENSITIVITY What does it mean to be culturally sensitive? • Recognizing and respecting differences in cultural backgrounds. • Understanding the impact of cultural differences on an individual’s beliefs, customs, morals, and lifestyle. • Effects how individuals view proper medical care. Example: • Learning to understand religious beliefs of an individual and how those may effect deliverance of care. • Reference: What is culturally sensitive care?, 2023

CULTURALLY EFFECTIVE CARE What is culturally effective care? • Providing care that meets the cultural standards of the patient while also providing care that is effective and safe for the patient. • Tailoring care based on cultural preferences. • Includes being culturally sensitive to patients cultural differences. Example: • If a patient speaks a language other than English they are providing with a competent translator and materials that they can understand.

CULTURAL INTELLIGENCE What is cultural intelligence? • Being educated on a patients cultural beliefs. • Goes hand in hand with cultural sensitivity and culturally effective care. • To provide culturally sensitive and effective care it is important to be culturally intelligent. • The ability to adapt to cultural differences across patients. Example: • A nurse has two patients in one room from two different cultural backgrounds and able to adapt culturally from one patient to the next. • Reference: Buchbinder, Shanks, and Kite, 2021
