1.
What are the major conflicts in this case?
There are several important issues that arise from the fact that Rose cannot vote
according to her beliefs in the committee. It is possible that Joe's senior physician status
makes people feel intimidated by him, and Rose may be uneasy because Joe
previously mentioned that the person who objected to him lost their job. Furthermore,
Joe's reluctance to participate in department-level committees and his belief that nurses
should be paid more to meet their responsibilities pose additional challenges.
2.
If you were the chair of this committee, what actions would you take to
improve the work dynamic of this committee?
If I were the chairman of this panel, I would create a guidebook to establish rules and
regulations among staff members, encourage free expression of thoughts, and set
expectations for company performance. In order to ensure a successful committee and
achieve effective patient outcomes, it's important to reiterate the purpose of the pain
management protocol and the goals that have been set. It's crucial to clarify everyone's
role to avoid any misunderstandings about what is expected from each person.
3.
Charles is working hard on incorporating strategies that enhance team
members' motivation and engagement, but he is faced with certain
challenges. What alternative direction would you propose that Charles
take?
As there are varying opinions among the members, Charles needs to adjust his
approach to achieve an overall consensus. For the committee to succeed, everyone
must be aware of the group's overall goals. While it might seem easier for one person to
make a decision, it's crucial for the entire group to be involved in the decision-making
process. Once the group's pathway is clear, Charles should consider the opinions of all
members. As a healthcare manager, Charles must facilitate an open and honest
conversation among the members. This can be an opportunity for personal
development, by treating identified issues as learning experiences and growth
opportunities. Every member's idea should be acknowledged, laying the groundwork for
disagreements to be handled calmly and respectfully. Everyone should be encouraged
to share their ideas for improvement. This collaborative approach ensures that everyone
is included in the decision-making process and that any disagreements are handled
appropriately. To encourage employee loyalty, it's important to recognize and reward
employees based on their performance. A healthy workplace environment also plays a
crucial role in improving employee capability. Additionally, providing opportunities for
self-development can help employees grow and contribute more effectively to the
business. Promoting teamwork and encouraging participation from everyone based on
their abilities can improve team morale and performance. Finally, promoting happiness
and optimism can boost employee loyalty and productivity.
4.
You are the direct supervisor of Rose and will be meeting with Charles
soon to discuss Rose's concerns and involvement in the pain-management
committee. What are Rose's main issues, and what possible solutions
would you propose to resolve them?
Rose is worried that Joe may use his power to fire her if she disagrees with him or
expresses her own opinions. Here are some possible solutions to resolve the issue:
Rose could raise her concerns with HR and request their intervention to monitor Joe's
behavior towards others. Alternatively, the committee could include more members and
conduct anonymous voting during meetings, which would provide everyone with the
freedom to express their views without fear of repercussions.
5.
What should be done about Joe? How might his behavior and issues be
addressed?
Effective communication is the key to handling Joe's behavior. While physicians are
valuable assets in the healthcare field, they must take into account the positions of
others. Charles can address Joe's concerns and opinions by asking him "what if"
questions. Additionally, discussing peer reflection with Joe can help him understand the
perspectives of his team members, leading to a peaceful compromise.
