Competency Goal l
To establish and maintain a safe, healthy learning environment.
Functional Area 1: Safe
Functional Area 2: Healthy
Functional Area 3: Learning Environment
My aim is to provide a secure and nurturing educational setting, prioritizing the safety,
well-being, and academic advancement of the children under my supervision.
I prioritize children's safety by closely supervising them and ensuring all indoor and
outdoor areas are carefully proofed to minimize injuries. To achieve this, I maintain constant
visual and auditory contact with the children. Outdoors, both teachers and I rotate to monitor
their activities, especially around the playground and when we’re playing with toys (1.2). Our
safety measures include examining our toys and play areas for any hazards, child safety locks on
cabinets/drawers, and plug covers on all outlets (1.1).
Additionally, we conduct thorough daily
inspections of the playground for any hazards such as sharp objects, debris, or potentially
harmful plants. Being on the lookout is the key to our safety protocols.
In the realm of maintaining good health, I prioritize healthy eating and germ prevention
to ensure the well-being of the children in my care. Encouraging balanced nutrition, we steer
clear of sugary options, offering two nutritious snacks and a healthy lunch that includes fresh
fruits and vegetables (2.4). Equally vital is our commitment to germ control. We enforce regular
hand washing upon arrival, before/after meals, sensory activities, outdoor play, and restroom use
(2.3). Toys undergo thorough sanitization at the end of each day and as needed throughout the
day, ensuring a hygienic environment for the children. Additionally, regular health checks are
conducted to minimize illnesses, and any unwell children must remain absent from the center for
at least 24 hours until symptom-free. By adhering to these practices, we maintain a healthy
environment and significantly reduce the risk of germs spreading.
Creating a secure and nurturing learning environment for children is a key objective for
me, as I believe in fostering their independence and lifelong learning through engaging play-
based activities. By closely observing the children's development throughout the week, I ensure
that activities are tailored to meet each child at their individual level, promoting an inclusive
learning experienceIn the classroom, I encourage 4-5-year-olds to use dry erase markers on
whiteboards and chalk on chalkboards for writing, making the process both educational and
enjoyable. Math sessions incorporate interactive materials such as counting bears and engaging
math games. Science activities involve journal documentation and hands-on experiments, like
cultivating plants and exploring color mixtures (3.2). On the playground, I organize dynamic
movement activities, like the obstacle course I recently designed using tires, hula hoops, and
tunnels. To ensure a comprehensive learning experience, I facilitate daily activities encompassing
language, math, science, sensory exploration, and art (3.3). By crafting weekly lesson plans, I am
able to maintain a nurturing and secure learning environment that caters to the diverse needs of
all children.
