Describe the health care setting in which you desire to work.
What would be a common strategic goal for that setting?
Explain at least 3
performance management measures that may be used to measure
progress as well as corresponding strategies to achieve the goal.
Good evening,
The healthcare setting that I would want to work in, is the one I already work in, which is a
medium sized dental service organization(DSO). A medium DSO is the best of both worlds. It has
all of the resources of a large DSO but is small enough that the offices do not feel like a mill just
turning out patients and allows practice managers to run their practices as they see fit. Having
small teams allows for culture building and making experience for patients more personable.
There are three performance management measures that really stand out to me, that help with
achieving a company’s goals.
The first performance measure is patient satisfaction surveys. This is one of the most important
performance management measures, yet the concept and strategy of it is very simple. It can be
as simple as having a patient fill a survey out at the end of each appointment or sending out
quarterly email campaigns to have patient fill out a survey. These surveys can vary from office to
office or based off things the company wants to track such as communication, quality of care,
and communication. Strategies to improve the company, should focus on the quality of care,
improved communication with patients or how staff treated patients.
The second is financial performance metrics and key performance indicators. These are metrics
that help leaders analyze their business and measures the progress of their strategic goals.
Some examples of these are working capital, leverage, debt-to-equity ratio and
seasonality(2020). There are many strategies to help a company improve on these performance
metrics. They can be anything from clarifying your business plan, knowing your daily costs,
reduce expenses and increase prices.
Lastly, there is reducing waiting times for appointments. There are a couple of ways to look at
this performance measure. The first is to measure the amount of time it takes a patient to be
scheduled for an appointment. If a patient is waiting for three months to be seen for an
appointment, they are more likely to cancel or no show. If a patient is able to be seen the same
day or within 24 hours of calling to make an appointment, they are more than likely to keep
their appointment. It can also be looked at the amount of time a patient is waiting to be seen
after they check in for their appointment. If you are always running behind, it will annoy
patients and either make it, so you are seeing less patients a day or having to have staff work
more hours to be able to see all patients. With both of these items it is important to use
technology to help streamline processes. Some ways to improve this is to collect patient
information as soon as possible, use secure messaging, separate phone work from check in and
analyze your current process(Brenner, 2022)
