In Chapter 10, the text addresses primary, secondary and tertiary prevention programs.
What are these levels? Give an example of an effective program in each level. Give a brief
description of each program, its intended purpose, and target juvenile population. Why do
you think they are effective?
Primary Prevention Program are programs that focus on the conditions that could lead to
delinquent behavior such as truancy, poor parenting, and prenatal exposure to toxins.
Example of a primary prevention program: Planned Parenthood.
Planned Parenthood is a healthcare provider. And not only does it target teens, but educators and
adults as well. Its intended purpose is to deliver reproductive healthcare, sex education, and
information to individuals all over the world.
Why do I think planned parenthood are effective? I think planned parenthood is effective
because they are not just targeting one population they are targeting everyone around the globe.
Also, planned parenthood is dedicated to their customers and I personally feel like planned
parenthood is an easy way for young mothers.
Secondary Prevention Program are programs that shift the focus of services to the delinquent
youth and address the delinquent behavior at its earliest stages.
Example of a secondary prevention program: The Boys and Girls Club.
The boys and girls club is a program located in different cities that targets young children to
young teens, it includes physical activities, art, acting, talent shows, etc., the boys and girls club
mission goes as follows: “To enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to
reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens” (BGCA.ORG).
Why do I think the boys and girls club is effective? I think the boys and girls club is effective
because it targets young children early that way when they get older they would stay involved
with their community. And, given the fact that I worked at the boys and girls club I enjoyed
working with the teenagers because they would always ask how can they stay involved even
after they leave the boys and girls club.
Tertiary Prevention Program are focused on reducing recidivism among those who are already in
the juvenile justice system.
Example of a tertiary prevention program: SMART Recovery Program.
SMART stands for: (S)elf (M)anagement (A)nd (R)ecovery (T)raining .
SMART Recovery is a self-help program that offers a place where teens can get together to try
to consider and change behaviors that hurts themselves and others like smoking, drinking,
fighting and using drugs, etc.,
Why do I Think SMART recovery program is effective? I think the SMART recovery program is
effective because their targeting young teens that are dealing with addictions that ultimately hurt
them, and their families, and they also help them with changing the delinquent ways.
