Chapter Review
A.
By Yourself:
1.
Identify several factors that influence children’s ideas about food and food preferences.
Families, teachers, and peer groups all influence the child 's ideas about food, and even TV and
social media at times. They can either really help or not depends on what they are trying to
promote on tv or on social media.
2.
Describe how program directors, teachers, and families collectively contribute to
children’s nutrition education.
For families they will be different for everyone because of their culture, money, and their
nutrition knowledge. For teachers it is important that they display a positive attitude through
their actions, word choice, and their own willingness to try new foods. Peers are a little
different. They usually have a huge impact on other peers. They can either approve or
disapprove quickly.
3.
What role do teachers play in developing and implementing nutrition education for
children?
The teachers play a huge role as the children are around the children all day and children tend
to have the watch behavior. If they see you eating at a candy bar for lunch, they are going to
think that eating just a candy bar for lunch all the time is okay. Teachers also need to have the
curriculum to explain the nutritional value of eating health. This also means that if they make
snacks for the children the teachers need to make sure that they are eating healthy snacks as
well.
4.
What fundamental principles should guide nutrition education activities that are
conducted with children?
Teachers should contribute to children 's understanding, make sure to involve hands on
experiences, also make sure that the activities are safe and a positive learning experience.
These will help the children learn safety and more about nutrition.
5.
Why should food not be used for art projects?
Food should not be used for art projects because one is not edible and two because it gives the
child a message that it is okay to play with their food.
B.
As a Group:
1.
Discuss the ways in which nutrition education experiences can
promote children’s
knowledge and skills across all developmental areas.
when labeling foods, food prep methods, reading directions, and cooking utensils and using
language to communicate with their peers and teachers and response to directions promotes
language development and listening skills.
Following step by step direction in recipes, understanding math concepts like (cups, ounces,
teaspoons), counting and science concepts like heating, mixing, heating/cooling promote
cognitive development.
Hand - eye coordination and hand - finger dexterity is developed thought measuring, cutting,
spreading, and serving food.
Children working together as a team and problem solving while cooking foods promotes social-
emotional development.
2.
What criteria can teachers use to identify nutrition education concepts that are
appropriate for children?
Nutritious food is essential for children 's bodies to grow and stay healthy.
Nutrients come from foods. It is these nutrients that promote growth and health.
