Aged-Out Foster
Based on the average from DFPS data over the last five years, 1,200 Youth Age Out of
the Texas Foster Care Program on a yearly basis (DFPS, 2022). 53% of this population are
homeless within the first 18 months due to lack of resources. (Zlotnick, 2009) 3% of the
population earn a college degree which means majority of the population remain uneducated and
in low-income. (Gaille, 2017) This transition period for young people aging out of foster care
brings obstacles, mainly difficulty with housing, education, and work. This population frequently
lacks stability, support, direction, and resource access upon leaving. Although they will qualify
for resources from the state, many lose their state benefits due to housing inconsistencies and no
addresses on record. In addition, most of this group has mental health problems, making the
transition to independence much more difficult.
Ex-Offender
It is essential for inmates returning from prison to have social support and resources to
get the help they need to obtain employment. Once individuals have these things, they can begin
their career development and improve their overall health. Ex-offenders need to find employment
to survive outside of prison, and most employers will regard them as untrustworthy and possible
liability.
People who are returning to life after incarceration frequently have several barriers to
employment. Specifically, when released from prison on probation, they must find employment
within the first 60 or 90 days of being released. Most of the jobs available are typically
warehouse work with a low wage work pay. FedEx, Borden Diary, and Goodwill claim they are
background friendly. FedEx, Borden Diary, and Goodwill claim they are background friendly.
However, in all actuality, you cannot have any violent charges nor robbery/ theft for
consideration for the positions available, which still eliminates a vast majority of this population.
The primary barriers to obtaining work for ex-offenders returning to society are lack of direction,
lack of assistance, mental health concerns, society judgment and reluctance to give them a
chance. (Fahmy, 2021) It is crucial for prisoners who are released from jail to have social support
and access to resources so they may acquire the assistance they need to find work and create an
emotional support system to re-build their confidence to avoid them feeling institutionalized.
This population can start their professional growth and enhance their general wellness once they
have these items.
College Graduate
The hurdles that high school students encounter is frequently deeper for college
graduates. According to recent statistics, more than 60% of college students use the degrees they
earned to get jobs in the fields in which they majored. (Hess, 2019) College students are not
prepared for the significant issues that they encounter when navigating their careers. Students are
frequently under pressure to identify and pursue their passions. Another point is the recruitment
process is subjective and prone to error due to this many talents are missed. Recent graduates
without networks or connections find the recruitment process stressful and challenging to
navigate; and career resources do not always take the needs of the students into consideration.
To alleviate these recent graduates should be given accurate information about career choices,
adequate preparation to apply for jobs, and the suitable job placement agencies that will help find
jobs based on the students' interest and major.
Aged Out Foster Care Resources
DFPS Extended Foster Care

To locate services, follow these prompts: DFPS Home>Child Protection>Youth and Young
This state funded program provides young adults turning 18 opportunities to continue
extends foster care services until age 21.
This allows them to mature more and be able to find
resources needed to pursue better lifestyle options. There are certain criteria individuals must fit,
which can be challenging for the aged-out population who are not born and raised in Texas. It is
a state of Texas-only resource. As far as multi-cultural considerations due to shortages in
placements, the extended foster care could deter a lot of young adults due to placements. Many
of these extended foster cares are group homes therefore, it is hard to track culturally sensitive
placements.
Buckner Next Step

70% of young women will become pregnant by age 21. (Gaille, 2017) To utilize this
website is very easy to use, the client will begin the process by applying online at the bottom of
the home page and someone will contact them for further instructions. Once an application,
policy, and procedures are submitted, the organization will transport the young lady to a
residential setting on the Dallas Buckner Children & Family Services campus. Women between
18 and 24 can participate in a supervised independent living program that will support them to
fulfill their goals in school, employment, and independent living. Only women who have grown
out of foster care are the focus of this organization all participants must be Texas Resident. In my
evaluation, this transitional program is beneficial since it allows young women to feel
independent even if they do not want to remain in extended foster care.
