Each journal entry must begin with the following information: Your Name: Ashley Bates Supervisor’s Name: Hannah Neely Agency Name: Spring River Mental Health and Wellness Agency Location: Riverton Kansas Date/Week: 11/12-11/18 Then, you will elaborate on each of the following: 1. What did you do this week? o This week I worked on my own a lot, providing crisis follow up for clients, I assisted a client who was currently in the hospital ensure services were set up for them when they were discharged the next day, and I met with them when they were discharged from the hospital, to make sure that they had all the supports in place they needed to ensure safety while they were back home. We worked on a safety plan together, and scheduled weekly follow up appointments with her therapist and scheduled her to see her case manager 2x a week for the time being. We also got her medications picked up, and I scheduled her medication management appointment with our provider. She signed ROI’s for us, and I ensured our med provider had her records from the hospital so she could take over medication management for her, and that we had all of her follow up appointments scheduled and ready for her. I also worked on writing up a proposal to present to the director and board at my field, that discusses an area of disconnect in communication between the adult and children services, and I researched and provided evidence based practice backing my proposal to start implementing intentional communication between the teams to collaborate and ensure full wrap around supports for the family. 2. What is your experience with field supervision? What did you learn this week? o This week I spent a lot of time researching evidence based practice that shows the importance of collaboration with parent/child mental health service providers to ensure full wrap around services to the family, and ensure that the needs of the child and parent are being met. My field supervisor gave me guidance and direction in how to start this process, and how to utilize evidence based practice in writing a proposal that states the “problem” my “solutions” and then evidence based practice that
supports my solution and ideas. This is an area of social work that I am not really comfortable with (and honestly, one I do NOT enjoy.) I am not a fan of research, or policy, or anything that is even kind of macro level. I just want to work with the clients, and let someone else sort out this stuff (ha) but It is good experience for me, and this was something that I noticed and brought to my field supervisors attention, and she agreed, but put the task on me as part of my practicum learning. 3. Describe the processes that occurred while you were learning. Hannah and I discussed Evidence based practice and the importance of it in our research, and when presenting ideas and proposals for change within your organization. We went over research in social work, and the areas of social work that this is more common in, but also how often she uses it, even in crisis. Hannah used this as a learning experience for me, so I could be exposed to an area that I am not comfortable with, and to get me out of my comfort zone and push my limits a little further. 4. As you are implementing your learning agreement in collaboration with your field supervisor: o This week I felt like I had more Macro-level type work again, as she has me doing research and working on writing a proposal to present to the director to incorporate the adult wing and child wing collaborating 5. How are you able to regulate and express emotional reactions appropriately when working with clients? I think it helps that I have been working with clients, especially in behavioral health for such a long time, that I have learned to just not take it personal. That was the best piece of advice that was given to me, 12 years ago by a therapist at the first residential placement I worked at.. he said “They are never mad at you.. just remember that. When these kids are going off, and yelling and cussing and hitting and kicking and freaking out. Its never actually you.” And that has always stuck with me. Yeah, sometimes I am the one that said something that set them off, but that amount of anger is never an appropriate reaction to something so little, and I always know there is something deeper behind that emotion than whatever it was I just said or did. It also helps me remain calm when I know my clients a little before going into it. Knowing some of their background and history, and having an understanding for their trauma, helps me better understand their reactions. I can’t be mad
