Start Assignment
Purpose:
In this project you will explore the history of your family, focusing on a number of issues that we are
discussing in the course. You will be asked to consider the influences of your family, societal structures,
and your own individual choices on your personal health. By reflecting on these issues and answering
qualitative questions, you will have the chance to see how social factors may shape your life
experiences, which could assist with informing future quantitative studies.
Note
: If you have any concerns with doing the assignment on your health history, an alternative
assignment is possible. The alternative assignment is described at the end of the document. Indicate in
a footnote of the essay document “Alternative Assignment” if opting to do this version of the assignment.
Activities:
1. REFLECTION
Reflect on the following questions. You may want to write down or record your answers, as this will make
it easier when completing the write-up portion of the assignment. You can also draw upon any other
sources of information (photos, diaries, videos, consultation with family members) that are available. The
questions below can be used as a suggested
framework, but you are welcome to develop other
questions:
If family came outside of the mainland US:
How did your family come to be in the United States (US)? What were some of the reasons for
moving to the mainland US?
What has been your family’s work experience in the mainland United States and/or other
countries/US territories of origin?
How have the jobs held by family members changed through generations?
How has your family’s standard of living changed over time? Why did these changes occur/not
occur?
How has the family structure and the roles of men and women changed?
Has your family become closer (personally and/or geographically) or more distant/dispersed?
What has been your family’s experience with racism, prejudice, or oppression?

What kind of participation has your family had in social, cultural, and political organizations—or in
efforts to create societal change?
What has your family’s experience with the educational system been?
How have religious/spirituality practices changed over time?
For each of the questions above (or those that you develop), probe with yourself on how that
question/issue influenced your health
[which is broadly defined as health status, knowledge,
behaviors (dietary behaviors, physical activity), self-care, utilization and perception of the health care
system, etc].
2. ESSAY
Based on information from the reflection, write a 3-page essay (12-point font, double spaced, 1-inch
margins) responding to the questions listed below: 1. To what extent have your family’s experiences been the result of social structural forces, accidental
factors, and/or choices and decisions made by its members?
2. To what extent have your family’s experiences influenced you and your life? How have they
influenced your health/health behaviors?
3. To what extent have your health/health behaviors been influenced by broader social forces in the
mainland United States and/or other countries/US territories?
4. To what extent have your health/health behaviors been influenced by your own choices as a person
living in the mainland United States?
5. How could the information you received during this exercise be used to inform a quantitative study?
Reflect on how you can incorporate a DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion) approach to this and any
future studies.
The above questions are for your reflection, but you may ask family members for their views on these
questions too.
Rather than answering each question mechanically point by point, try to develop themes in your essay,
telling good stories. You may therefore focus more on some questions rather than others. In addition,
please include any other important experiences that may have shaped your family’s development. It is
important that you tie your family’s development/experience to health
– this should be what you
spend the most time on in your essay. An important piece of this assignment is for students to reflect on
privilege and familial social experiences to synthesize a future quantitative study using a DEI public
health approach.
