1 Field Project When an individual is in crisis, they usually need someplace to go. This week’s assignment asked that I search for agencies in my community. In my initial search, I found four facilities within a 10-mile radius. With further analysis, there were only two as one was a reference-only facility. I narrowed down my selection because I live in Richmond, California. This area is in the bay area and surrounded by water. I thought that I should find places that were easier to get to from my location. Places that would be easy to go to with affordable public transportation. That eliminated the facilities that were located across the bridge in Marin, California or Vallejo, California, and even further away and across a different bridge in San Fransico, California. The following agencies are in Richmond, California within a 5-mile radius from my residence. It was difficult getting in touch with supervisors or program directors that could explain more about the services. After many attempts, I am creating this directory based on observation alone. Agency #1 Early Childhood Mental Health Program (ECMHP) 200 24 th St. Richmond, Ca 94804 (510) 710-9200 www.ecmhp.org Went to location: February 15, 2024 When arriving at the location I spoke with a receptionist that gave me the contact information for Sami Qreini and Sam Watson-Alvarado. I sent them an email to try and meet with them for a discussion. I heard back from Sam Watson.
2 We scheduled a phone call for 6:00 pm February 26, 2023, but I never heard from them. As I was unsure if I was calling the office or if they were calling from a personal phone, I was unsure how to connect from my side. Sam, however, had my personal phone number. In observation of the waiting area, there were many brochures. In different corners there were colorful pamphlets labeled ‘Stress’, ‘Separation’, “Choosing Child Care’, ‘Self-Esteem’, ‘Special Needs’, and ‘When is Your Child Too Ill to Go to Child Care’. Each of these pamphlets included research involving each topic and resources for more information on the topic as well as resources for personal growth. Other forms and information was also readily available to take without needing to ask. Forms such as a Beneficiary Grievance Review Request Form that allows a client to fill out a formal grievance for their ‘specialty mental health or substance abuse use disorder services’. The Appeal or Expedited Appral Request Form allows a client to appeal the Medi-Cal Delivery System Plan or a provider that denied services. There was also a suggestion form that could be filled out to be given to the provider on how they can better their services. The information available was how to get an advance directive and continuity of care when mental health benefits have been used. When talking to the receptionist, I learned that ECMHP offers many programs. One program we discussed was Family Enrichment Nights. On these nights, ECMHP offers activities, crafts and play to the families of the community on the last Tuesday of every month. On these nights, they also learn more about supporting their children’s social-emotional development and find out about the free Everyday Moments program for families. Dinner is also provided at the end of the night.
3 According to their website, ECMHP services the community by offering programs such as Child and Family Therapy, Comprehensive Therapeutic Preschool [(CTP) a school for preschool aged children offering education and education on emotional development, relational capacity, and social skills], Child Care Solutions (providing observation and assessment of the child in a childcare setting, consultation with staff, support services for supervisors and program directors, training for school staff members, and referrals to other community resources), Everyday Moments (support and resources to find more joy and connection between parents and their children), Perinatal Circle of Care (Care and Support for pregnant women and their newborns), Keeping Families Together (the program that hosts Family Enrichment Nights and support groups for new moms and new dads), and Head Start Preschool Mental Health (teaches different strategies to parents and teachers for the child’s emotional well-being). Because I was unable to speak with anyone, I was unable to find out about eligibility, cost, or length of treatment. This was unfortunate. I called the office twice, went to the office once, sent two emails, and was unable to speak to anyone before my deadline. The receptionist was as helpful as she could be by giving me the email addresses of the people she thought would best help me. There were so many questions I wanted to ask.
