My score for the cultural competency checklist was 73. This assessment tool measures my level of cultural competency, and although I was happy with my score there is still more to learn. My definition of cultural competency is easy; it calls for the acknowledgment and appreciation of others’ cultures as well as my own. Looking over my score, I can see room for improvement. Communication skills are essential in cultural competency. I should research new skills that are useful in collecting information from patients to understand who they are, their cultural beliefs, values, norms, and perspectives in relation to moving forward with their healthcare needs. This will only help broaden my communication skill set to communicate appropriately and effectively with patients from diverse cultural backgrounds while remaining professionally sensitive to their culture. I am a brand-new nurse; I must be patient with myself and realize that communication skills do not happen overnight. However, I feel my communication skills and data collection from patients will become more precise, in-depth, and diverse with continuous exposure to different cultures that walk through the door. I also can achieve better communication skills by participating in mandatory continuing education within my work facility. There are hundreds of reasons why cultural competency is important in healthcare. 1. Reducing health disparities: Understanding different cultures helps healthcare workers reduce health disparities. Different cultures have different beliefs, practices, and attitudes when it comes to their health needs, which can affect their health outcomes. By being culturally competent, healthcare providers can better understand these differences and provide more effective and appropriate care for the patient. 2. Improving patient care: Cultural competency can improve patient care by improving communication, building trust, and promoting patient satisfaction. When healthcare providers understand and respect their patients’ cultural backgrounds, they can communicate more effectively, build stronger relationships with patients, and provide care that is more aligned with their patients’ needs and preferences. 3. Legal and ethical standards: Cultural competency is important regarding legal and ethical standards. Our government encourages healthcare providers to be culturally competent to ensure that all patients receive quality and respectful care.
