As a healthcare leader within a healthcare organization, your teams must be doing what
they are supposed to, especially when it comes to using data legally and ethically. One way to ensure that this is happening is by leading by example. One way to do this is by following regulations set out by HIPAA and making sure your team is receiving annual refreshers on these regulations. Next, would be to provide continuous education and development for each of your employees. This is where they can learn about data handling and how to implement best practices. This will help employees recognize when
things are not right and be able to raise concerns when something is found. Lastly, it is important to have policies in place to help give a clear understanding of data responsibility and to review it yearly so that everything is up to date with current regulations. Even with all these things, you may still receive pushback from your employees, and you need to know what to say when that happens. The first and most important step is to hold employees accountable. They may not like the added responsibility, but they must continue to do the right thing to ensure the safety of the organization. It is also important to talk about the benefits that doing this brings to the organization. Speak to the key item, that it will help negate legal risks for the company.
