After meeting the Hernandez family,
I noticed some initial adverse childhood experiences (ACE’s) and they raise some concern. I think the first thing I would do as a social worker is divide and conquer. I need to evaluate the situation of. Both the children and each parent individually. In needed to gain perspective and understanding without the fear of bias, judgement, or pressure from another family member. Then after I get all the necessary information, I can make a determination for next steps. Then I would administer the Pediatric ACEs and Related Life Events Screener (PEARL) test in order to further the data gathered in session. The point of this is for “Screening for ACEs and helps primary care clinicians assess risk for toxic stress and guide effective responses.” (Aware, 2023). Deepening on results I would either use “De-Identified Screening where respondents count the number of ACE categories on the screening tool and indicate only the total score — without identifying which ACE(s) they or their child
experienced. Or use Identified Screening where respondents count the number of
ACE categories on the screening tool and indicate which ACE(s) they or their child have experienced.” (Aware,2023).
The next steps I would implement would be to assign the parents and children to counseling both as a family and individually if possible. This is to encourage each member to deal with the either generational or current trauma they may be facing. Each family member clearly needs someone to talk to and vent their feelings if they are ever going to move on and become better people Next, I would use the ACE’s. Specifically, I would start by attempting to change the social norms and help enhance their parenting skills. What I mean by this is I would strongly suggest that the parents take parenting classes in order to help learn new
skills of cooping and discipline for their children. The children deserve to be in a safe environment. Next, I will administer the ACE assessment test. It is said the way to administer the test is by: “
The clinician should introduce questions on the trauma history carefully, stating the importance of these questions while also acknowledging that
they may be distressing. It is also important to use a screening tool that is sufficiently comprehensive and provides guidelines for determining the need for further Next, look for differences between the revised and the original version). Depending on client and contextual factors (e.g., the absence of space for a private conversation), it may be better to have client complete the ACEs questionnaire on paper rather than verbally through an interview and doing so
does not jeopardize the validity of the results. The client should understand that they are free to decline to answer any question and, whether conducted aloud or on paper, the clinician should non-judgmentally attend to client signals of distress.
In addition to protecting the client from overwhelming emotions that they may not yet be equipped to handle; this can provide clinically useful information on the level of impairment related to the trauma. Finally, it is critically important that
the clinician confirms that a client with trauma history feels safe and regulated before leaving the office. There are many grounding techniques that can be used to bring the client’s awareness back to the safety of the present moment.” (
McKerlie
, 2021). This is all to say that I would use this test as a way to cement the information gathered in the sessions. I want to make sure everyone is safe and not harboring any animosity or behavioral issues that could potentially complicate the progress being made so far. However, I am not naïve and understand that is a possibility. Lastly, if the parents are interested, I could suggest they speak with an employment social worker as a referral from myself to see if they have any other options for better employment since money is tight. Then if they are open to it, I could suggest finding local food sources in their area that can help them based on referral. References: Aware, A. (2023, December 16). Screening tools
