Classroom Accommodations and Modifications

Students’ individualized education programs (IEPs) must include “a statement of the
special
education services and related services and supplementary aids and services, based on
peer-reviewed research to the extent practicable…and a statement of the program
modifications or supports for school personnel” (20 U.S.C.§ 1414[d][1] [A][i][IV]). This may
include the use of accommodations or modifications for the student to participate in
the least
restrictive environment (LRE) in accordance with a free appropriate public education
(FAPE).
Develop an original response guided by these questions:
● Compare accommodations and modifications. Identify an example of an
accommodation and a modification, and explain how they differ.
● What types of assistive technology might allow students greater access to the least
restrictive environment (LRE) in the general education classroom? Provide an example
and explain whether this is considered an accommodation, modification, or neither.
