Case Study: Multiple Sclerosis
1.
What cellular structure is degenerating and rebuilding in MS
? In multiple sclerosis, the myelin and fundamental nerve fibers within the brain, optic nerves, and spinal cord are damaged or crushed. Myelin is the substance that covers the nerve strands and amid MS it degenerates.
2.
Does this explain the progression we see with the signs and symptoms? Explain why
.
Yes, it does
Since the astrocytes and oligodendrocytes cannot keep up with the degeneration, symptoms will worsen over time because a s we age demyelination will increase along with the natural decline of regeneration
3.
When there are issues with the neural tissue like this, they will often look into the eye. Why? They will look into the eye because optic neuritis is an early sign of multiple sclerosis. While diseases like multiple sclerosis
has no known origin but one of the early symptoms that gives it away is that it disrupts the nerves in our eyes which can lead to loss of vision .
4.
Here are three early symptoms. that we might see in MS. Assign them to whether they are a part of the sensory, motor or autonomic nervous system. Afterward, try to describe how MS would cause these symptoms.
o
Dysarthria-Motor (Dysarthria is a speech disorder in which multiple sclerosis can happen. Within the muscles included in talking, it is caused by weakness or possible loss of balance. With ms basic functions such as speaking become problematic )
o
Paresthesia-Sensory (a sensory burning or prickling sensation that is usually felt in the hands, arms, legs, or feet, but can also occur in other parts of the body.)
o
Constipation-Autonomic ( MS causes this because signals to our brain are never transmitted and our body is neither alerted
or informed that there needs to be a bowel movement .)
