The Case for Incentivizing Health
Which of these cues do you consider to have the most impact in terms of changing healthcare behaviors of the patient?
o
The incentive that I consider to have the most impact in changing healthcare behaviors is “Encourage high frequency of participation in the healthy behavior during the period when incentives are provided, to improve the potential that the behavior will be sustained when the incentives are removed.” The frequency of participation would help build habits that would be more likely to stick once the incentives are removed. Hopefully, during participation, the patient would begin to feel the positive effects of living healthier and want to continue.
Which of these cues would you most readily respond to as a patient?
o
The incentive I would most like to participate in: "Provide small and frequent incentives close to the completion of a healthy activity to encourage adoption of healthy behaviors while incorporating frequent feedback through the program.” This is because the more frequent incentives, even though small, have a shorter-
term sense of accomplishment.
Which cues do you think are most likely to be adopted by providers and insurance companies? o
I have had insurance that used a monetary incentive system. It was a small and frequent incentive cue. They provided a gift card that they would load funds if you participated in certain activities, like annual exam and health questionnaire participation. It was profitable for me, so many people would be willing to participate.
