In Chapter 2 of your text, you learned about the Blum's Model of Health Determinants
, which suggests four (4) factors contribute to overall
health and well-being. These factors include Environment, Lifestyle, Heredity, and Medical Care. (See p. 62- 64 in your textbook)
Other Contemporary Models of Health Determinants
includes factors such as social position, socioeconomic and political context, as well as cultural and societal norms and values. (See p. 65- 65 in your textbook)
Health Initiatives are formed at the local, state, national, and global level. As you continue to develop an understanding of the U.S. health care system, it is important to recognize how beliefs

COHP 101 - Initiatives Assignment National-Level Health Initiative- nutrition and healthy eating programs
#
Questions
Answer
1.
Describe the health initiative.
The National-Level Health Initiative Nutrition
and Healthy Eating Program aims to improve
health of the population through making
nutritious foods more available
2.
What are the beliefs and values of the health initiative?
Though there are many national level
initiatives that can be found on the Healthy
People Website, the Nutrition and Healthy
Eating Program is concerned with providing
people with more access to and information
about nutritious foods both to reduce the
consumption of unhealthy foods that
eventually factor in to health problems and to
reduce hunger and food insecurity.
3.
How does this initiative affect you personally?
This impact has had a positive impact on me
since my parents have always emphasized the
importance of eating fruits and vegetables
throughout my childhood rather than the
quick and easy packaged foods.
4.
How does this initiative affect the local community?
I have a friend who worked on a project through the
IChallengeU program at her local ISD which
dealt with trying to promote healthy foods for
college students on campus at GVSU so she told me she learned a lot about food insecurity
and the
dilemma between a quick carb-filled
packaged snack and a nutritious meal kit with
an expiration date and at least a few minutes
to assemble. Working with my team we
devised a food cart out of a bicycle with a
small cooler trailer that I believe is still in use
today. This issue is very prevalent no matter
how much or how little it is talked about,
especially since what a person eats ties
directly into their health condition. Not to say that if a person eats one bag of chips they’ll
combust, or if they eat one bunch of spinach
they’ll turn into Popeye, but dietary habits do
effect your health condition short-term and
long-term as shown by the multiple evidence
based resources displayed on the second tab
of the Healthy People 2030 website

COHP 101 - Initiatives Assignment 5.
How does this initiative impact one’s specific professional organization?
This initiative effects professional
organizations directly because no matter your
position in a company, dietary habits effect
your level of energy and overall health. The
workplace is a broad ever-expanding facet of
people’s lives and there are more efforts than
ever before to try and better people’s overall
health through the workplace, for example:
the developmental program Healthy People
2030 has that emphasizes the number of
workplaces that offer nutrition programs as
employee health promotion program.
6.
How does this initiative impact medical institutions?
This initiative effects medical institutions
positively since people are hopefully aware of
and are making more healthy eating choices,
leading to less chronic health issues like high
blood pressure due to high sodium intake or
diabetes due to high sugar intake. Less people
with that condition indicates more healthy
people
7.
How does this initiative impact one’s quality of life?
Healthier and more mindful eating will
hopefully come with a healthier lifestyle and
lead to a richer quality of life. Eating better
will reduce your predisposition to dietary
related illnesses and lead to a happier body
8.
How does this initiative relate to the Blum’s Model of Health Determinants?
The National Level Nutrition and Healthy
Eating Program directly impacts the Lifestyle
wedge of Blum’s Model of Health
Determinants. As the textbook states,
“Researchers estimate that 30% to 50% of all
cancers and as many as 30% to 35% of cancer
deaths are linked to diet” (World Cancer
Research Fund and American Institute for
Cancer Research, 2007) and diet happens to
be a massive part of lifestyle alongside
physical activity.
9.
How does this initiative relate to Contemporary Models of Health Determinants?
Socioeconomic Status impacts the Nutrition
and Healthy Eating Program through food
insecurity. Quite often, even in season fruits and vegetables cost more than the average
pre-packaged and generally more unhealthy
foods that people tend to reach for. Would you rather get one bag of apples that will go bad in
a two weeks or cereal, fruit snacks, and a bag
of chips? Due to financial constraint many
