1 Moriah Payne Text Learning 2 SPCE 680 – 81 02/26/2024 Chapter 3 : Clients Health Before suggesting treatment to clients, practitioners must take into account various factors, one of which is the client's health. Clients may exhibit deficits or engage in problematic behaviors due to unaddressed medical needs. Skill deficits and concerning behaviors can impede a client's ability to access education, therapy, or community resources. Wilczynski (2017) suggests that evidence-based practitioners should consider medication, medical conditions, comorbidity, biological variables, and mental health when determining the appropriate treatment for a client. It is advisable for practitioners to refer clients to medical professionals for further evaluation of potential health issues. I am currently employed at an autism clinic. A large number of our clients have different medical conditions. During my time at this organization, there have been numerous occasions where students have faced difficulties with acquiring a skill or displaying problematic behaviors. Both the behavior specialists and teachers have encountered challenges in understanding the reasons behind these occurrences. For instance, I recall a specific instance when I worked with a student who consistently refused to follow directions. Despite being given clear instructions, the student would not comply. They would not respond when their name was called, neglect work assignments, struggle to focus during group lessons, and avoid interacting with their peers. After exploring various interventions without success, the teacher proposed a hearing test. The results revealed that the student had a hearing impairment. Once the hearing
2 issue was addressed, the student showed significant improvement. The student began to follow directions, maintain focus during lessons, and actively engage with peers. Had the BCBA considered the possibility of medical issues earlier, the hearing problem could have been identified sooner. As I intend to work with children who have diverse disabilities and health conditions, it is crucial to conduct thorough evaluations for any underlying health issues before considering treatment options for skill deficits or problem behaviors. Chapter 6 Quality of Life, Generalization and Social Validity "The concept of validity is often overlooked or misunderstood, particularly in the field of applied behavior analysis. As a Registered Behavior Technician, it is crucial to have a clear understanding of the term validity. According to Wilcynski (2017), validity is defined as the extent to which the recipient and stakeholders view a treatment as just, suitable, and rational. Upon reading Chapter 6, I gained a deeper appreciation for how a client's quality of life is directly influenced by positive outcomes, and how this relates to the significance of their treatment. The chapter underscored the importance of aligning a client's treatment plan with their overall well-being, emphasizing the critical role that quality of life plays in informing effective interventions." The assessment of quality of life can be conducted through four key metrics: engaging in preferred activities, maximizing life satisfaction, enhancing well-being, and participating in universal experiences. When individuals partake in activities they enjoy, their quality of life is enriched. Additionally, their quality of life improves when they lead a fulfilling life and experience better health. Furthermore, common experiences contribute to an enhanced quality of life. Therefore, it is crucial to prioritize quality of life when designing treatment plans. As a prospective BCBA, it is essential to consider all aspects, including the client's quality of
3 life, to ensure their success. Implementing enjoyable and common activities, as well as seeking feedback on the client's satisfaction with therapy and programs, will be integral to their progress. 4 practitioners have to consider a range of variables, which includes the client's health. A client can show many deficits or engage in problem behaviors due to medical needs going unaddressed. Skill deficits and behaviors of concern can negatively interfere with a client's ability to access their
5 education, therapy, and or community. According to Wilczynski medication, medical conditions, comorbidity, (co- occurring conditions), biological variables, and mental health are all key features that evidence- based practitioners evaluate before identifying the “right”
