As we can see in 2019 to 2020 the number of students who received their bachelor’s degree from Northern Illinois University dropped by 200 students. I am curious to see what 2021 and 2022 will show. I also believe that more students are shifting to remote options or taking more time to complete a degree. For example, when I enrolled in this program at SNHU, I was given 8 years to complete it. I believe more students are taking their time to complete their degrees while they work on other aspects of life like a career, having a family and traveling. (The Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System, n.d.). NIU offers a lot of different student success services. They offer peer tutoring, the Disability Resource Center, and the Huskie Academic Support Center which includes tutoring in math or science, writing and research, and academic skills like study skills and test anxiety. There is also Academic Success Mentoring which consists of setting goals, assisting in finding on and off campus resources, developing work-life plans, self-care checks, meeting with your academic advisor, and preparing for graduation and port-graduation (Student success, n.d.). Because of these check-ins with students, this will ensure they are on top of their homework and projects, as well as on track to graduate on time with the appropriate courses. Also, student mental health has been a huge topic over the last few years. Checking in with students is critical to ensure the student is healthy, safe, and taking care of themselves.
