HSCI 431: Homework 2 Read the article below in the text at the end of the chapter (citation below), and then answer the questions at the end of the article (listed below) Arrizabalaga-López, M., Rada-Fernández de Jáuregui, D., Portillo, M. P., Martínez, O., Etaio, I., Mauleón, J. R., Echevarría, E., Gómez, F., & Rodríguez, V. M. (2018). A randomised controlled trial of a program based on the theory of planned behavior to promote fruit and vegetable intake among schoolchildren: PROFRUVE study protocol. BMC Public Health, 18(1), 827 1.
What are the three components of the program the authors propose, and what are their related activities? §
The three components of the program is to examine the impact of the intervention program on behavioral components, to analyze the association of the behavioral determinants with FV intake, and to study the relationship between social demographic variables and the effectiveness of the program. §
The activities consisted of school outside activities such as visiting farmers markets, and home activities 2.
Identify three ways the authors propose to change children’s attitudes toward eating more fruits and vegetables? §
The author’s propose to change children’s attitudes toward eating more FV by exposing them to FV. For example activities of having a “fruitmeter”, which works by social pressure to reach the objective of eating more FV. Another way is having the children visit their local farmers market and the final way it to have a goal diary related to FV consumption. With this diary the children will try a new vegetable this week or eat a fruit for breakfast 3 times per week and will be filled out at home with the participants’ families. 3.
How do the authors propose to enable subjective norms to contribute to greater intention to eat fruits and vegetables? §
The authors propose to enable subjective norms to contribute to greater intention to eat FV by recording the consumption of FV of all the classmates on a sheet that all can see, which is the “fruitmeter”. This will most likely give the children motivation to comply with those perceived expectations, and it they see that others are doing it, they most likely will
2 also. They also involved parents and teachers into to program, so that the children can see important figures in their lives valuing fruit and vegetable consumption. 4.
Name two techniques the authors plan on using to increase perceived behavioral control? §
The first behavior was to provide the children skills to prepare fruits and vegetables. §
The second behavior was working on situations that promote the consumption of FV. Such as participating in processes involved in producing, selling, and preparing FV. 5.
Take a moment to consider how you might use the theory of planned behavior constructs to increase children’s intention to eat fruits and vegetables? What are the similarities and differences between your response and those proposed by the article authors? Be specific §
Using the theory of planned behavior constructs, I would focus on increasing knowledge about fruits and vegetables, trying to make them more appealing and creating a positive environment. I would include a hands-on approach such as cooking classes or gardening projects to increase perceived behavioral control. This is similar to the authors approach, but it adds a practical component.
