Marlene Fuller South University HCM 4012: Case Studies in Healthcare Administration Professor: Dr. Christopher Pratt 1/26/2023 Cross-training is the technique of preparing employees for work in several positions or for duties that fall outside of their typical responsibilities (Mind Tools Content Team, n.d.) . For this week’s discussion, I am going to be deciding whether or not to cross-train lab technicians as x- ray technicians (South University, n.d.) . I would first need to know what a lab technician’s and a radiology technician’s job duties are. A lab technician's responsibilities include ordering and arranging supplies, sterilizing equipment, and documenting data. An average lab technician gets $20.57 per hour and the pay rate may vary based on degree, experience level, and geographic area (Indeed, 2022) . A radiologic technologist, often known as an X-ray technician on the other hand, is a medical specialist who uses imaging devices and instruments to plan a patient's internal organ and tissue systems to evaluate their general health. They are responsible for preparing findings, aligning imaging equipment, and discussing procedures with patients (Indeed, 2022) . The average hourly compensation for an x-ray technologist varies from state to state and is roughly $30.63 (Radiology.ED, n.d.) . Now, that I am aware of exactly what role each of the job positions plays in the healthcare organization, I would look at the organization’s internal and external environment and exam is there need for an x-ray technician and which employees are fit for this position as well which employees stand out. Then, I would find out what are the regulations and requirements to
cross-train lab techs into x-ray, review the cost and examine the pros and cons of financial considerations in making this decision. In reviewing the cons, the organizations will have to fully pay for training, and these chosen employers will be making more money. But the pros are that cross-training will fit the organization’s demand, and the company should increase revenue as well as employee morale. To address a weekend staffing shortage in a small hospital that lacks x-ray technicians but there is a strong demand for their services, with 30% of that demand coming from the critical care unit (South University, n.d.) , I would start by offering incentives and bonuses for my staff to work overtime. I also want to keep in mind that burnout is a severe issue So, to cover the weekend while my crew is receiving training, I would collaborate with a staffing agency in my service area. In Conclusion, by removing the staffing agency workers to fill in when staff or workflow changes, cross-training helps firms save money (Mind Tools Content Team, n.d.) . Cross- training also keeps people motivated since it presents them with challenges and may even enable them to discover talents or skills, they were previously unaware of (Mind Tools Content Team, n.d.) .
