Question 1
a)
Draw an arrow to link up the parts of the cardiovascular system to their location on the diagram. Aorta
Left atrium Left ventricle Right ventricle Right atrium Pulmonary veins Pulmonary arteries Inferior vena cava Superior vena cava
b)
Refer to the diagram above and explain how blood flows through the heart.
Firstly, the blood is collected from all the body through superior and inferior venacava and collected in right atrium which
passes blood through tricuspid valve into right ventricle when heart contracts. After then, the pumped blood is carried by the
pulmonary artery to the lungs for purification. After purification of blood, it brings back blood through pulmonary vein and
pours into left atrium which contracts and blood is pumped towards left ventricle through bicuspid valve. Finally the
oxygenated blood from left ventricle is pumped through aortic valve and reaches to aorta which circulates oxygenated blood
all over the body.
c)
In one to two paragraphs, explain the functions of the cardiovascular system.
1.
Transport of nutrients, oxygen, and hormones to cells throughout the body and removal of metabolic wastes (carbon dioxide, nitrogenous wastes). 2.
Protection of the body by white blood cells, antibodies, and complement proteins that circulate in the blood and defend the body against foreign microbes and toxins. Clotting mechanisms are also present that protect the body from blood loss after injuries. 3.
Regulation of body temperature, fluid pH, and water content of cells.
