Unit 15 - Ethics and Professionalism
Question one: What can you do as a community provider to promote social justice and reduce health disparities in this population?
A healthcare provider practicing in a rural setting must remain aware of the many setbacks the community may have. These stressors include access to healthcare, access to pharmacies, transportation, diagnostic services, and psychiatric services (Bhatt & Bathija, 2018). My pediatric clinic rotation took place at a rural clinic in a small farming community. Therefore, I got to see firsthand the health disparities and stressors that can affect children from low-income families. One of the main resources I would focus on is access to free vaccines. Vaccines for Children is a federally funded program that provides vaccines to children at no cost regardless of their ability to pay (CDC, 2022). All children should have access to vaccination despite their insurance or lack thereof. Another issue I address is transportation. Not all families have the means of personal transport. I would be sure the parish transit would supply transportation to and from the clinic and that the patient is provided with a transportation schedule and contact information for the service. I would also be sure to educate the staff on healthcare disparities so they can assist as needed. The Office of Minority Health created the National Cultural and Linguistic Appropriate Standards which assists facilities in providing education to their staff regarding cultural competency (Garzon Maaks et al., 2020). Cultural competency training should be part of new hire orientation at every healthcare facility. Partnering with schools and community resources would also be beneficial in addressing healthcare disparities. Volunteering for events at schools or senior citizen's centers would be a great way to address the community. The provider and the staff need to note that culture within a community is ever-changing and
should remain open-minded to cultural context within the health care system. References:

Hi Mikayla! Great job on your post. I also chose question one because I feel that most healthcare facilities in rural areas need the most resources and funding. For example, I recommended partnering with Vaccines for Children. Vaccines for Children is a federal program that provides low-income children with vaccines for little to no cost (CDC, 2022). This would especially be useful for children of immigrants who do not yet have healthcare or are too nervous to seek care due to a language barrier. We both also agreed that the county or parish should be responsible for assisting those with no personal transportation with alternate methods of getting to the clinic for proper care. Great job!
