Hello Class,
Option 2:
What moral guidelines should we use when it comes to recently introduced healthcare technologies of any kind (you will note and engage with your own examples) and social technologies of any kind (you will note and engage with your own examples)? Involve care-based ethics in your answer.
The ethics of care does not take “obligation” or “duty” as fundamental; nor does it require that we impartially promote the interests of everyone alike. Instead, it begins with a conception of moral life as a network of relationships with specific people, and it sees “living well” as caring for those
people, attending to their needs, and maintaining their trust (Rachels, 2018). When it comes to moral guidelines and healthcare technology, confidentiality is one of the main examples. Healthcare technology has many positives aspects such as conveniency and more affordable options to patients. Unfortunately, there are many negative parts as well. Technology can be hacked, errors can be put into the computer, and malfunctions can occur as well. A moral and ethical not only affects quality of care, but it may even impact patient safety. One of the tools for protecting the doctor-patient
relationship and the reputation of the health care industry is the hospital clinical ethics committee (Ali, n.d.).
Telehealth is an example of healthcare technology. Telehealth is a great way of providing patient medical charts and letting the patient have access from the click of a button. Telehealth also allows the doctor to communicate with the patient from home. The moral guidelines in using telehealth are autonomy, HIPAA confidentiality, and
safety of the patient. If one of these are broken, then the patient could be put at risk emotionally and physically. By using autonomy, we allow the patient to make their own decision without judgement. HIPAA is used to protect the information of the patient and help keep trust between the doctor and patient. Lastly, the correct information should always be entered into the EHR to avoid medical errors and possible complications of the patient.
