In this paper, we will explore the case of Mrs. Jones and her family. Mrs. Jones is an elderly woman who suffered abuse, neglect, and financial exploitation at the hands of her daughter and her husband. Mrs. Jones is a widow that went to live with her daughter after she promised to “take care of her”. Unfortunately, after a year things changed for Mrs. Jones. We will explore the case from Mrs. Jones’ perspective. I will discuss physiological and psycho-
social theories that may have contributed to Mrs. Jones's experience. Legal and ethical considerations and a proposed approach to treatment. 1

Mrs. Jones and her family were mandated to attend counseling after her daughter and son-in-law pled guilty to physical abuse and financial exploitation. Mrs. Jones’ husband passed away 6 months prior to moving in with her daughter and husband. Mrs. Jones moved in under the guise of her daughter wanting to “take care of her”. Vulnerable and alone, Mrs. Jones agreed.
Mrs. Jones moved in believing her daughter had good intentions. Mrs. Jones was not aware of her son-in-law’s financial position when agreeing to live with them. After living with her daughter and husband for one year, Mrs. Jones was confined to her room. While grieving her husband, Mrs. Jones struggled with depression and weight loss. Mrs. Jones received a significant amount of money from the life insurance policies and the sale of her home. In a matter of two years her son-in-law and daughter had coerced into giving them all of it. Mrs. Jones was threatened with homelessness whenever she didn’t give money on demand. There were moments Mrs. Jones would try to speak up, but she was shaken a few times for being “mouthy”. Mrs. Jones did not receive her medication for hypertension and arthritis. The medical neglect could have been the reason she experienced increased confusion. As a mother and grieving widow, Mrs. Jones probably never anticipated being treated the way she was. Mrs. Jones was presented with an opportunity to be closer to her daughter and grandchildren. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs expresses that human behavior is dictated by the following needs:
●
Physiological
●
Safety & Security
●
Love & Belonging
●
Self-Esteem
