Relative Core Competency and Resource Analysis 5 = very strong; 1 = very weak Competencies CommonSpirit Health HCA Healthcare Veterans Health Administration Healthcare Equity & Ethics 5 5 5 Improvement Science 4 5 5 Systems Science 5 5 4 Employee Engagement 4 3 4 Accessibility 4 4 5 According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), there are several core competencies needed to build a successful healthcare workforce. Healthcare equity and ethics ensures that any changes are virtuous and principally sound in addition to advancing justice for all persons within the healthcare system. CommonSpirit Health received an optimal score because it is a not-for-profit organization, with a mission that strives for social justice and healthcare equality for all. HCA is a for-profit organization that has been recently identified as one of the most ethical companies in the world (Glassdoor HCA Reviews 2023). Improvement science streamlines processes and limits variability systematically. CSH did not receive perfect marks as this organization is only a couple years in from a massive merger between 2 large companies that have multiple various systems that are still advancing through the integration process. The VHA is known for its simple-yet-effective electronic health record (eHR) that was implemented many decades ago and was designed from clinicians in mind. Systems science captures the knowledge of healthcare system operation theories and applying strategies to further organizational success. With both for-profit and not-for-profit
companies taking innovative strides to improve the outcomes of patients and distribute work more appropriately for staff, they scored better than the VHA with their organization’s future in mind. However, even with these efforts, the VHA out-performed the other companies on employee engagement which focuses in on recruitment and retention of staff at every level. It should be noted that all three healthcare systems scored lower than the 70 th percentile on Glassdoor’s recommended places to work and positive business outlook responses. CSH scored better than HCA because the organization offers a more robust benefits package including nine paid holidays throughout the year, whereas HCA was not as favorable relate to PTO accrual and offering paid holidays for employees, according to anonymous surveys on Glassdoor. Accessibility relates to the ease of patients to access and receive care. The VHA scored highest because this organization serves patients across all 50 states. HCA has the most hospitals, but is only distributed across 19 states in the U.S. while CSH is scattered over 23 states but with the fewest hospitals of all the companies in this comparison. All three organizations offer secure, HIPAA-compliant online access to patient records and information.
