WEEK 4 DISCUSSION – ESSENTIAL SKILLS SOCW – 6101 WALDEN UNIVERSITY Task groups are formed with specific objectives or tasks in mind, which may vary depending on the nature of the project or initiative. These objectives or tasks help determine how the group will operate and the roles and responsibilities assigned to each participant. "In task groups, we are typically less concerned about the needs of the individual member and more focused on the group task" (Kirst-Ashman & Hull, 2018, p. 108). Support groups are commonly established to provide individuals with a safe space to share their struggles, concerns, and issues with others who can relate to their experiences. Support groups are people sharing characteristics who get together to provide one another with emotional sustenance, encourage new coping mechanisms, and allow a strength-based sharing of issues, concerns, and problems (Kirst-Ashman & Hull, 2018).       As a professional social worker, my primary objective would be to prioritize facilitating the Domestic Abuse support group, utilizing my skills and knowledge to ensure that all members receive the appropriate level of assistance and guidance required to address everyone’s unique needs.       Brokers help group members obtain needed resources by connecting them with community agencies and other service givers (Kirst-Ashman & Hull, 2018, p. 114). I want to assume the role of a broker within this support group. My primary responsibility as a broker will be to facilitate the process of connecting individuals with appropriate resources that can offer ongoing assistance tailored to their specific needs and overall well-being. Group norms are "written expectations about how individuals will act in certain situations" (Kirst-Ashman and Hull, 2018, p. 116). Norms help to establish group rules, boundaries, and accountability. I would help shape these norms by setting an example and demonstrating these attributes to promote a safe, trusting environment of honesty and accountability within the group. By modeling this behavior, fellow group members are likelier to engage, follow suit, and adopt the same approach.        Group maintenance roles are concerned with improving, enhancing, or increasing group functioning (Kirst-Ashman and Hull, 2018, p. 125). Establishing roles will help provide order and cohesiveness among the group members. One of the effective ways to encourage and promote participation within a group is by designating a member to take on the role of encourager. This individual can catalyze engagement and help foster an environment of active collaboration and contribution in the group. Group members focusing on group building and maintenance encourage other members to participate (encourager) (Kirst-Ashman and Hull, 2018, p. 125).       Deviant members engage in behavior they know the group will oppose or find annoying, such as continuing to speak out of turn, interrupting others, or refusing to participate in group activities (Kirst-Ashman and Hull, 2018, p. 126). This can lead to tension and conflict within the
group, as other members may become frustrated or annoyed with the deviant member's actionS. Group leaders must address abnormal behavior fairly and respectfully to maintain a positive group dynamic.
