Alternative Text: WGU Loves Teachers Greetings, Mentor Teacher! Thank you for allowing our Western Governors University (WGU) teacher candidate the opportunity to participate in your classroom. We appreciate your willingness to mentor, coach, guide, and support the development of quality educators. While demanding, this can be a rewarding and mutually beneficial experience. This experience is associated with the Preclinical Experiences (PCE) course and falls in the second phase of our developmental framework for clinical experiences (see below). Our Developmental Framework: WGU employs a three-phase developmental framework to support teacher candidates through clinical experiences. This framework provides scaffolding for candidates to have experiences with depth, breadth, diversity, coherence, and duration. All candidates are evaluated based on InTASC Model Core Teaching Standards with a focus on the full teaching and learning cycle. Phase 1: Early Clinical Experiences are course-embedded activities of virtual observations, live simulations, and interactions with professional educators. Phase 2: Intermediate Clinical Experiences are classroom-based activities for practical application of the full teaching and learning cycle through observation, collaboration, independent teaching, and reflection with a practicing mentor. Phase 3: Culminating Clinical Experiences are classroom-based activities allowing the candidate to take full responsibility of the full teaching and learning cycle to develop and demonstrate the skills and confidence necessary to be an effective educator.
Scheduling Time Together: The teacher candidate’s classroom schedule is set in collaboration by the mentor teacher and WGU teacher candidate. Unlike student teaching, PCE does not require attendance for full or consecutive days. The days and hours will be determined by what works best for both mentor teacher and teacher candidate but still allows for participation in core academic instruction. Discuss what schedule will work best for both you and your teacher candidate. This should be mutually beneficial. The total experience should be completed in a reasonable time frame (2-4 weeks). If you need assistance in developing a schedule, contact the course instructors using the e-mail address provided below. Our Expectations and Support: This experience affords the WGU teacher candidate the opportunity to observe and participate in a wide range of teaching experiences, which develops the skills and confidence necessary to be an effective teacher. WGU teacher candidates are required to prepare adequately for this experience to participate in an appropriate, professional manner while learning and developing in the classroom with P-12 students. Participation and engagement with students: The WGU teacher candidate is expected to participate and engage with students when appropriate. This experience is about the application of theory through learning by doing. Discuss with the teacher candidate when and how they can interact with students in the classroom. Diverse types of teaching experiences: The teacher candidate can engage in diverse types of teaching experiences. This may be in small groups, team teaching, working 1:1 with students, circulating and assisting as needed, or other engagement with students. Teacher candidates are encouraged to engage in instructional delivery as much as possible, but it is ultimately the mentor teacher ’s classroom and decision to guide the teacher candidate appropriately . WGU teacher candidates have received instruction in co-teaching models, and it is encouraged that they practice these skills with your guidance and expertise. Plan, teach, and analyze assessment results: The experience needs to provide the opportunity for the teacher candidate to teach a complete lesson as part of the full teaching cycle. The mentor teacher should approve the lesson prior to delivery. This lesson is part of the performance-based assessment submitted to WGU to evaluate the teacher candidate. This instruction can be delivered to a small group or whole class and can include co-teaching with the
