Data Quality, Standard Terminologies and Classification System's
Data quality is improved by standard terminology and classifications systems as stated by M, Johns in Enterprise Health Information Management:
•
Providing consistency
•
Provides accuracy
•
Interoperability
•
Congruent and seamless care
•
Information becomes comparable and usable for analysis
•
Makes sure everyone is using the same 'language' on charts. This allows everyone to be on the same page and for information to be consistent across care teams. All of this leads to a decrease in errors and an increase in quality of care, patient satisfaction and accurate charts.
•
The use of clinical terminology which is a set of clinical vocabulary used within clinical practice, allows for all providers to understand exactly what is being said and to understand how to document the findings

Data Quality requirements in Policies
All health organizations have policy ensuring that Information is
•
Accurate
•
Charted within a given time period
•
Consistent
•
Authenticated
•
Complete
•
Audited for quality and errors
This ensures that patient information is charted in a reliable way, accurately and across all systems to ensure the correct care is given. Technology also ensures quality such as the MPI. Training is ongoing to ensure that the technology is being used correctly since the information is only as good as it is entered.

Clinical Documentation Improvement and Data Quality
•
Clinical Documentation Improvement is the process of making sure health records are accurate, complete and providing feedback for improvement. (P, Oach & A, Watters, 2020)
•
Data Quality is ensuring data is accurate, complete, timely and legible.
•
Clinical Documentation Improvement needs data first to be provided. Data Quality is essentially the first step in CDI. Once the data is entered, then it can be reviewed for improvement. They both are ensuring accuracy, completeness, reliability, authentication and timeliness just at different stages in the process.
