To prepare:
Review the ISTE teacher technology standards and the SAMR Model. Think about how you are integrating technology into your educational setting–is it an act of substitution, augmentation, modification, and/or redefinition?
BY DAY 3 OF WEEK 7
Use the SAMR Model to
post
an explanation of how you are integrating technology into your educational setting, or how you would do so at a school in Grand City or in another educational setting with which you are familiar.
Include a description of how technology is helping accomplish goals and the mission in the educational setting you selected, and identify what potential technology could be utilized to lead to curriculum improvement and describe
the potential barriers to effective use of technology. Cite evidence from the research to support your response.
After reviewing the SAMR model, the phrase ‘above the line’ resonated with me. In my current role, I work as an Associate Director of Learning and Development in a corporate setting. I interact with various type of adult learners who all learn differently. When approaching the learning and development world and being able to apply the redefinition and modification of technology there are many ways the environment can be ‘transformed’.
Currently, technology is used in the day-to-day functions of many roles within the company. Specifically, for Customer Service Advocates (CSAs), they use various platforms to assist customers with billing or technical issue trainings. Previously, to train the CSAs, the training manuals were in paper form and their quizzes for each training module. Given many adult learners preferred to write down notes or they learned best by completing the activity, it still creates challenges with collecting data accurately. Similarly, having handwritten test and worksheets can create the same challenge. To introduce SAMR into the current setting and school setting the following can occur. Original Task: Learner quiz and training worksheets are in paper form. Substitute: Use a platform such as Quizlet, Google forms or Kahoot to collect results and data for
learners. Augmentations: Create various digital quizzes with logic and variety of questioning styles to test logic. Modification: Use the collected data to enhance reviews of topics that do not receive high scores to enhance the learning experience and engage learners to improve scores for a retest. Redefinition: Create an interactive progress chart to showcase class and individual data through the modules. Furthermore, there are two main barriers I see for the environments. These two barriers include funding and lack of training. When new technology is introduced, there is some sort of training needed for the trainer or teacher to receive throughout to ensure they understand how to use the platform. The training is necessary to ensure they are receiving the full value of the product at hand. The second barrier is funding. Many times, the school districts nor companies have allocated for additional funding to go towards making learning interactive. Many times, this is an
out-of-pocket expense- which sometimes leads to the platform or product not being bought or used. If the proper funding is in place, then ultimately the biggest barrier will no longer hinder the environment from thriving.
