A.) Curricular or Instructive Need Main idea is being taught through the curriculum Benchmark. The concept of main idea is being taught in only 2 units and is not giving students enough exposure. This is demonstrated through students scores on state testing against the standard. This limited exposure demonstrates a reason for the deficit. 1. Data Using the ELA curriculum, Benchmark, students were assigned various assessments that correlated with each unit. The data demonstrates a deficit in student understanding the concept of main idea. This is demonstrated in scores taken throughout the school year on various ELA assessments. When analyzing the data, students have scored an average of 44% when prompted with questions pertaining to main idea of text. These scores reflect that there is a deficit within the district and that this is a need that requires intervention. Upon further examination, the curriculum lacks more resources and materials that will help instructors target this skill students are missing. 2. Improving School Effectiveness One specific example of improving school effectiveness will help all students understand any type of text that they read, no matter the grade level. By helping students understand the text that they read, it amplifies their ability to comprehend various types of text. The second example of improving school effectiveness will allow teachers to present more diversity within their ability to deliver instruction. This will help students receive instruction enough times to aid in their understanding of the concept. By incorporating the concept into various subjects, students are exposed more frequently, allowing more time for practicing skills to help understand the text. Both of these examples improve the school’s effectiveness by ensuring that students are first, and their knowledge takes priority. With this initiative in mind, in the future instructors will be able to analyze curriculum as needed to ensure student learning correlates with the standards and what students are being assessed on. This improves school effectiveness by allowing the instructors to take control of the learning and create opportunities to further the instruction. This improves the effectiveness in instruction, along with the need for students to learn and continually close the gap in learning. Instructors are more vigilant and aware of the concepts being taught and how often, while improving student learning. This professional development will strengthen learning for all grade levels and provide more in-depth connections to the concepts and skills being taught. B.) Outline for Professional Development 1. Desired Outcomes The purpose of this is to enhance student understanding in main idea through curriculum exploration, additional resource, and opportunities to maximize exposure. Participants will be able to include main idea in various ways to aid in student learning. 2. Knowles’s Adult Learning Theory
The principles that will be incorporated into the professional development opportunity will be Problem Oriented, Intrinsic Motivations, Readiness, and Experience. a) Anticipated Results The specific knowledge and skills (Problem-oriented) that will be used to enhance instruction will be presented to students. This will inform instructors about the problem and the intent on providing more assistance to the issue. Using a survey (Experience), teachers will present their ideas and thoughts regarding the professional development they would like that aligns with the problem. This allows teachers or instructors to contribute to their journey of obtaining their goals (Intrinsic Motivation). Using this information, workshops and training opportunities will be provided using flexible scheduling. Instructors will be able to choose what they would like to do and making sure it was available (Readiness) to them when they were ready. These principles allow for a direct approach while providing opportunities for furthering instruction by making sure that the instructors are being prepared. 3. Coaching and Expert Support This professional development will be given by trained instructors from the ELA department. These instructors would have collaborated to ensure the fluidity of the concept being used in various subjects. Throughout the professional development, there will be multiple ways to attend and participate. One coaching opportunity with export support to all instructors will be creating a sample lesson that incorporates main idea into each subject, the effectiveness, and how often they can utilize this in the classroom. Other opportunities that will be given will be listening to experts recommend reading resources to allow ample exposure, how to navigate and ask guiding questions to correlate with the concept. Along with this, support will be given in various ways, such as planning a lesson, performing a walk through to incorporate the skills, collaborating to create activities, or additional support as needed. These opportunities will allow instructors the opportunity for ample exposure, support as needed, and the guidance to ensure quality collaboration is given. 4. New Knowledge and Skills Integrating main idea into various subjects throughout the school year to enhance student exposure. Exploring resources online that maximize exposure with fun learning opportunities. Instructors will be taught how to utilize this new technology into the classroom and how to interact with the data. The skill instructors will get the opportunity to sign up for will be integrating main idea into core subjects (Science, Social Studies, etc.). All of these opportunities will be selected by instructors based on their goals. 5. Learners Providing Feedback After attending any PD, the instructors will receive a survey to provide feedback. With the feedback, future professional development will adjust toward instructors learning goals and providing the support where needed. Instructors will be advised to sign up before hand, as well as sign in when at the professional development. Afterwards, using that information
