A description of your client (infant/toddler), including the biological, environmental, and cultural factors that are influencing this infant/toddler’s development and why. Explain how awareness of these influences could provide context to enhance treatment within the family. Describe at least one challenge you might experience when counseling this family. Justify your response with references to this week’s Learning Resources and 1–2 peer-reviewed articles from the past 5 years . Main Discussion Post – Martinez Family Tommy, two-month-old baby boy, was diagnosed with down syndrome in which his mother Jeanette fully takes the blame and believes she is the reason for his condition. Both Tommy’s parents, Jeannette and Miguel are seeking counseling, however main reason is due to Jeannette suffering postpartum depression since she births Tommy two month ago. Although during Jeannette’s pregnancy, a gestational screening was done as a requirement due to her age. Even though, the results emphasize a high likelihood of down syndrome, the parents left it upon their faith in God. The family is Latinx, are Seventh Day Adventists, which both Jeanette and Miguel play big roles of leaderships in the church. Miguel and Jeannette come from an extremely large lengthy family, with two children Gabby, 13-year-old daughter, and Tommy, 2-month-old son. (Walden, 2023) Since both parents were unaware to properly care of a child with down syndrome, it makes one think that they are not fit to be a parent whatsoever. Due to Jeanette continuously negatively thinking that she is the reason for Tommy suffering from health condition. Jeannette fully blames herself that due to her age, she caused her child’s development a problem. However, a child being born with down syndrome is not necessarily the end of the world, but Roach, Orsmond and Barratt (1999) emphasize that parent with children with down syndrome more likely to have difficulties caregiving for one because of child-related stress and parent-related stress. It can be an entirely different method to care for someone with down syndrome, one needs more attention and assistance. Even though, the couples include that they are unsure how to properly assist Tommy’s needs, without the parents being there for Tommy can not only affect him emotionally and mentally. So, developing awareness of biological and environments factors for the Martinez family can assist them to be able to get the proper intervention beneficial for their situation. One challenge I could possibly encounter when counseling the Martinez family is the parents unwillingly to fully understand and come to an
understanding that Tommy’s is still their child no matter what condition or diagnoses the child has. Not having the bond, a child has can cause conflict between the relationship with Tommy and his mother, Jeannette. So, Jeanette has to recognize the necessitates a child need from his mother and even his father which can be an affect the counseling to be effective. Reference: Roach, Orsmond, & Barratt. (1999).
