Task 2 Secondary Disciplinary Literacy  – C728 Sep 24, 2023 A.     Describe how inquiry-based teaching methods can affect student learning in your discipline. Inquiry based-teaching methods can affect student learning in a very positive way. Inquiry based teaching is a model that will base the learning around a problem and a question and asks students to solve it. This requires students to focus on a problem and apply different perspectives to solve it. This model creates a natural flow of learning seamlessly implemented into the course work. Students will usually work together in this model and assume active roles in the learning processes. Learners will also be provided resources and tools to search for information to aid in the solution.    B.     Type of Writing This writing activity is a research paper for a 9th grade science class.   Activity Topic The activity topic would be different scientists throughout history and their impact on society. This activity would be based on the inquiry question; How did this scientist change the world? This writing project would focus on many different scientists throughout history who impacted physics, chemistry, and other fields of study.
Discipline Standard 9.3. (C) The student is expected to evaluate the impact of research on scientific thought, society, and the environment. 9.3. (E) The student is expected to research and describe the history of physics, chemistry, and contributions of scientists.   Description of Activity   Students will be paired with partners to write a research paper on an assigned scientist. Each group would have a different scientist assigned to them, and they would also be allowed to pick their own scientist. Students would be given several days to compile research on 3 different ways their assigned scientist changed the world. As an instructional strategy, students would be given a ‘foldable’ note-filled paper as a reference for how to construct and structure their research. Students would use this tool to aid them in compiling their information.  After compiling their research, they would write a 4-5 paragraph research paper noting all their findings. To scaffold on this assignment, they would present their work to the class and the listening students would need to write facts down about the scientists presented to them.    Curricular Content   One tool I would urge students to use is biography.com. It has a search tool that can be used to search for any relevant person in history. This tool is helpful in finding information related to their assignment. History-biography.com is another tool that can be used in a similar manner. Students would also be urged to use these resources after everyone is done presenting their projects to further their research into other scientists.
