HNFE 2664 Module 4 Assessment Community Mobilization Due April 2nd by 11:59 p.m. 50 Points Purpose of this assignment This assignment will get you thinking about how to approach and solve a problem in the community using principles of community mobilization. Assignment Instructions For this assignment, choose one of the following problem scenarios and respond to the prompt below. Your response should be no longer than 500 words, double spaced. Assignment Deliverables This written assignment consists of one deliverable that will be turned in on Canvas: A written response to a problem scenario, double spaced, no more than 500 words Be sure to write which problem scenario you are responding to Assignment Grading Y our response should include: Discussion of how community mobilization tactics can be used to address the problem Discussion of which groups to target in a community mobilization approach Use this rubric to see how your deliverable will be graded. Problem Scenario #1 You are an NGO (non-governmental organization) with new funding to go into the hypothetical community of Middlestreet and address high prevalence rates of STIs and HIV among youth. You hold a community meeting of what you understand to be stakeholders. At the meeting, several factions erupt into a shouting match. Youth Advocates, Inc. and Planned Parenthood began talking about the need for better HIV education and the availability of prevention and contraceptive services for youth. Deacon Smith, pastor of the Middlestreet Evangelical Church, erupts in an angry tirade claiming that what these groups want is to destroy the authority of parents and to accept immoral behavior among youth. Ms. Mary Lightfoot, head of the Middlestreet School Board, adds to the argument by saying that the Board cannot let teachers just give out materials about sexual risk or talk about it unless parents approve, and that she has serious concerns about the school being put in this position. Finally, Doctor Bill Jones of the Middlestreet Medical Group tries to appeal for calm, and tries to get the group to at least acknowledge the problem. Discussion Prompt: How would you address this problem? How would you design a solution to this problem? What type of community mobilization strategies might you use? What, if anything, could have been done beforehand? What type of community mobilization strategies might you have used to prevent the conflict? Problem Scenario #2 Williamstown Board of Education would like to reduce the rates of childhood obesity in the district by changing the food available at school and introducing more physical activity opportunities for students, and they have contacted you to help design the program. The school board head, Dr. Sanchez, tells you that the school board recently agreed to allow a local snack food distributor, Lipid Foods, Inc., to place vending machines in the schools and feature some of its food specialities -- like Butter Crunch Chicken Nuggets or its famous Extra Plump Sports Dogs-- in the cafeterias. “We had no choice but to say yes,” Dr. Sanchez says. “The district was facing large budget cuts, and Lipid Foods offered to give us the money to cover the cuts. I’m worried that if we begin making changes to the food situation, the company will put out and leave us with gaps in our budget.” At the same time, Fast Motion Sports Gym, a local health club group, has offered to donate some money to the schools. Fast Motion would hold some promotional exercise classes after school for students and parents; they would also offer gym memberships if the students/parents want to continue. The Latinx members of the Parent Teacher Association are angry about this, saying that Fast Motion has no gyms in the part of town where Latinxs primarily live, and that they have no idea about life for many Latinxs who have to work many jobs and cannot easily access after school classes or membership “health clubs” anyway. Discussion Prompt: Taking into consideration the above, how would you go about designing a program to address the underlying health problem? Who would you mobilize in the community to come together? What type of community mobilization strategies might you use? What might be some unintended consequences of your mobilization efforts? How might you address these concerns during the planning stage?
